I would highly recommend getting the 8700k over the 7700k but yeah you will be able to play witcher 3 at 4k and if its later down the line you maybe nvidia volta gpus will be out and you could get one of those and get better performance than a 1080ti.

System Specs

CPU: I7-5820k   MOBO:Asus X99 strix   RAM: 32gb corsair Dominator Platinum 2666mhz   GPU: Gigabyte G1 Gaming 980TI  PSU: Corsair RM1000i

so if i get a i5-8600k what mobo and ram should i get i want to do vr and run games on 4k but i wont beable to do that until i get a new gpu but so it is prepared

What's your budget?

Z370 if you want to OC.

If you're stretching your budget the other chipsets are supposed to be dropping very soon which will make the non K Intel CPUs like the 8400 more viable vs Ryzen 1600. Which are probably the two best bang for buck right now.

RAM is down to budget, if you can afford what you want you can suck it up and just throwdown fat stacks. You could gamble on prices dropping, say get 1 stick of 2 and as you can afford it, hopefully upgrade later.

Speed depends on price, local shops seem to have 2133/2400/2666 for similar prices but there's a price bump to go higher. Probably worth getting at least 2666.

i am in australia

A new i7-7700K sells for around AU$440. So a brand new, unused, still in box i7-7700K for AU$360 is not a bad deal.

These choices really depend on budget and what all is needed. In general a Z370 motherboard and 2x8GB of DDR4-2666 or better memory.

Intel K processors need to be matched with a chipset that supports overclocking. These chipsets currently use the Z prefix.

DDR4-2666 or higher is optimal. Faster can be better in some applications.

There are air coolers that do a good job overclocking. But a decent aio is fine.

Then it is not really possible to make concrete suggestions.
