I was wondering if a 1050 Ti could run vr when overclocked i currently have a +300mghz overclock on the core and the memory on top of the factory overclock that was already in place I ran the steam cr test and it put me at capable with the arrow just in front of the green “ready” line.

So would it work or should I upgrade to something like a 1060 or 70 (but I don’t really want to upgrade cause miners)

Be isn't 1080p, it's 1440p.  You can try it for yourself and if you need to, upgrade

Want to custom loop?  Ask me more if you are curious

that is not how VR works. Most games don't even have settings. Some do but there is usually no resolution settings as it would super negatively impact viewing experience compared to lower level of detail or lower res textures.

It is minimum spec for the Oculus so it should work but I only ever tried my 1080 and something of the calibre of a 1060 (i think) in a store prior to purchase.

I know how vr works most(but not all) have a variable resolution however what I meant was I don’t want that resolution. To drop below 1080p

Well I can not guarante that.

Oculus has Asynchronours Timewarp and Async Spacewarp and probably some other techniques to keep a pleasent experience on a 1050 Ti.

Not to sound agressive or anything but I can't understand what you are demanding here? How about asking a concrete question?

Have you tried this to see what the experience of other users is like?

The two screens together are 2160x1200. Not quite 1440p, but also not quite 1080p. Also, the render target for a VR headset (the Rift for example) is higher than the native resolution of the displays to compensate for the distortion caused by the lenses.

VR resolution doesnt work quite like non-VR.  The PSVR for example (used on PC) has a native "rendering resolution" of 960x1080x2.

A game will render on your display at 1920x1080 but it gets re-scaled by the GPU for the headset.  I find that 1080p in VR has horrid scaling artifacts (jagged edges, poor text quality) without at least 1.5x oversampling/super-sampling.

So far, from what I have seen, you need ~4k rendering resolution for VR to actually look like ~1080p on a "24 monitor on your desk instead of 720p.

I assume that this is why GTX 1060/RX 580 is what is recommended, as they can push 2560x1440 relatively well.

Also, any FPS under 60 causes stuttering and tracking lag in a 120hz headset.  Not sure how Rift/Vive handle this, but staying as close to 90 as possible is quite important.

Also also, because of the pentile displays in Rift/Vive headsets, their resolution is something like 33% lower than the spec because of the subpixel layout (specifically the resolution of red and blue).  The PSVR headset has a more traditional RGB subpixel layout and it deals with the screen door effect by using a diffusion grating on the surface of the display.  Its output quality is actually quite good when combined with a PC.

I think that that level on the SteamVR Performance Test is pretty darn good and shouldn't warrant any immediate upgrade being needed. That being said, it's all up to personal preference and if you want to run it at the best possible experience, you may need to upgrade your GPU. Also if you plan on getting something with a higher resolution like a Vive Pro, you may need to upgrade a little sooner.

With your setup I think you're good to play at mid to low settings in your average VR title and then you can see how the GPU market is looking after a few months or when Nvidia releases that next gen.

The only problem is that a VR headset is so expensive.  I cant see spending $400 on an accessory when you cant really use it for much because of under-performing primary hardware.

Maybe wait until GPU pricing settles down?  Save a bit of money then grab at least a 1060 level GPU and a headset.

That's true for sure. There are starting to be a couple of deals popping up. I got a VR headset as a gift a few weeks ago and needed to buy a new GPU, so my situation was a little different but I found a deal on a 1070 for just a tiny bit over MSRP and managed to get one. If OP can hold out a little longer and a new GPU gen drops, there's a chance you could get a next-gen 1060/70 equivalent and be able to drive something like a vive pro for a better deal than you'd get picking up one now. If you can't wait and you go for a normal Vive or Rift, you should be able to do okay for the time being with your current card.

I got my HMD in a similar way.  Friend had PSVR, didnt use it, swapped a E3-1220 (i5-2400)/750 Ti build for it.  Came out pretty cheap, I only had ~$150 in the rig because most was recycled from old broken systems people had given me.
