Cpu upgrade path....

Go to solution Solved by PorkishPig,

I'd take a look at buying an i7 4790k. The logical Xeon path would be an E3-1271 V3, but there is no benefit in going this route.

You can view a full list of supported processors for the LGA 1150 socket at http://www.cpu-world.com/Sockets/Socket_1150_LGA1150_H3.html.

Just curious as to what path I should do to upgrade my current cpu. I know I could go devils canyon but I'm not sure if a xeon would work with my current motherboard.

I5 4460

Gigabyte Z87x-D3H

16 gb Patriot ddr3 1600 ram

I will be checking back a little later as I'm going to get a few hours of sleep. Thanks again!

The 4770k and 4790k are pretty much identical except for base clocks/turbo. I think the Devils might have got upgraded TIM, but a quick delid would fix that issue regardless and I doubt the temp differences are more than 5c between the TIM's.

The Xeon will not give you the same longevity. It will not be easily overclockable and will come with lower clocks.

If you are choosing to go with a 4770k or 4790k they can normally be found pretty cheap used. Another alternative is to also look at the dell workstation pc's that are being retired to ebay and the like. A lot of these are running i5 and i7's so you could probably find one with a 4770 (non k) for around $125-175 which would still be a decent upgrade for you and then you get all the included hardware and could just make a second machine if desired for a similar price. I have purchased a few of these to use as game server machines. (better ST performance than most dedicated server builds)
