Laptop shuts down after 2 minutes by overheating

MehMatt

The fans on my laptop max out after 2 minutes and then 20 seconds after that the laptop will shut down. I've cleaned the fans and reapplied thermal paste but nothing seems to help.

The laptop has been battered and bruised. A lot of the screw mountings have snapped off so it's held together by only 12 screws and I wonder if it's because it's not fixed together tight enough. All the heatsink mountings are there and tightened down as much as possible.

Any ideas of the cause or how to fix it are welcome, thanks.

I would suggest trying to figure out where the heat isn't passing through and go from there

If you have a thermal camera or a temperature probe, that would be ideal to not risk burning your fingers, but going by touch works too.

My laptop has a removable CPU so I took it out and put it back in again and it seems to have sorted it out. Could one of the pins being slightly loose have been the cause?

Cheers for the help anyway.
