m.2 PCIE adapter

I am building a system with a rog strix x370-5 gaming mb, The manual shows that the following are the specs for the pcie slots.

 

1 - pciex16 gen 3

1 - pciex16 gen 3

1 - pciex16 gen 2

3 - pciex1 gen 2

 

It does have an m.2 nvme slot that is rated at gen 3 x4

I want to add another m.2 so I am looking for an adapter for the pcie slots

 

Here's where it gets fun. I am seeing x4 and x16 adapter cards gen 3 some of the x4 cards can mount a single m.2 and some are dual. The x16's that I have seen can go from a single to 4 m.2's

 

I get the feeling that an m.2 ssd can only use 4 lanes???? T/F

 

Question is do I really need x16 for a single m.2. Are they really giving the m.s card all 16 lanes or is this just manufacturer slight of hand making you think you got more but they are only really using 4 lanes. If they are using all 16 lanes I would like to put it into the pciex16 gen 2 slot and not waste the second gen 3 slot in case I want to add another gpu. I would think that 16 lanes in a gen 2 slot would be more that what the m.2 ssd could handle for speed anyway.

what m.2 drives are you using?

 

m.2 is 4 lanes max.

 

it will be a bit slower in the pcie2 lane for sequential transfers due to it running at pcie2 x4 from the chipset.

I would guess M.2 drives wouldn't be capable of using all x16 lanes. Trick of marketing, x4 will be fine.

 

What I don't get is why Asus would only put one M.2 slot instead of two.

You only get anouther pcie3 x4 from the cpu to use. Otherwise your using chipset lanes that are slower. And how many people are use multiple m.2's anyways?

I looked at some of the other mb's that did have 2 m.2 and found that nearly all of them will give you gen 3 x 4 on the first one and sata on the second so crap on that

Pretty sure it does have 2...

but the second one is sata only so a 960 wont work.

That's ok thanks very much. I will check out that board. I have not bought the board yet and I can switch if it will do what I want. That one will work as they will both support gen 3 x4. one also will support sata as well

why do you want dual m.2's anyways? Id just get a single bigger one.

you can do that all on one drive. There more than fast enough for that.

I may still do that if all else fails. I just saw the price for that board. yikes!!!
