I wanted to get the community's views on this as I am sure many people out there are buying mice and being wowed by many exclusive features on certain mice. Some features which I want to discuss are:

1: The 4G Dual Sensor from Razer.

Sounds interesting but how does it affect the user?

2: Sniping modes on mice such as on the Corsair M60/65, R.A.T. mice, the Ourobouros and some other mice.

How much nicer is an FPS game with these buttons? Becasue I REALLY want this feature.

3: Having lots of programmable keys like on the Logitech G600 and Razer Naga

4: Looks, we all like good looking mice and we probably like lights on a mouse.

5: The feel, is it worth compromising on ergonomics to gain a few other features?

By the way just wanted to know what is the best mouse which has feature number 2.

CPU: Intel Core i7 3770k | Graphics Card: PowerColor 7970 V3 | Motherboard: Gigabyte Z77X-UD4H | HDD: 2TB Seagate Barracuda | Memory: 2x4GB Corsair Vengeance 1600MHz CL9 | PSU: XFX Core Series 550W Black Edition | Case: Corsair 200r | Monitors: LG 23EA63V 23" 1920x1080 IPS 60Hz + Lenovo L1700pC 17" 1280x1024 75Hz

Well, I start off by answering the title first :D. What features do mice actually need? Hmm, left and right button and a scroll wheel(some of them don't need this but I doubt most of them needs it). The rest is up to the user preference. Some people go for many buttons as they can just incase the left click dies or having double click issues, you can set the programmable button to act as left click.

1. AFAIK, Razer 4G Dual Sensor system is a combination of laser and optical tracking sensor. To ensure better accuracy and surface tracking.

2. Never owned them ╮(╯▽╰)╭

3. Pragrammable buttons, before buying the G600, I'm having a hard decision which to choose either the Razer Naga or the Logitech G600. Here are my reason why I choose G600. I need a mouse which can toggle the lights on and off because I'm going to run the computer 24/7(doing some stuffs). Has a tilt button on the scroll wheel that allows me to surf the net easily instead of pressing alt+left/right button. side buttons originally has 0 ~ 9 numbers on numpad and + and - keystroke on the last bottom 2 buttons. I've changed them to make my usage easier, video recording on the bottom last button because I rarely uses them. G-shift button got replaced with alt+tab. And so the other keys.

4. Yeah, my computer location is in the hall. Everytime family watches movies, I have a chance to turn them on. G600 allows me to custom the lights on the mouse. Now I do realize each time I change the light mode on the mouse, my custom programmable buttons also changed back to original. This means, if I change the light mode, it went to another profile. So each time I want to game with my mouse, I have to switch to light mode to have my gaming programmable buttons.

5. The feel I can't really describe, on linus unboxing review, some said it's like having sex in your hand. Yeah, if you let all your 3 fingers sit on the mouse and the pinky finger at the corner, it's comfortable. If you're a claw grip user, maybe it doesn't feel comfortable because the left, right and the G-Shift buttons are sensitive.

For the price, somehow it dropped and some of the retailers here not bringing in anymore. To me, I think its worth for me because I'm not a massive left click spammer.

EDIT : 2. G600 do have this "Sniping Mode". Here's a screen shot of mine

As you can see the picture below, there is 3 modes multicolor lights on the mouse, green, and black. Currently using the green mode(my theme color of the day :D) for gaming, black for surfing the website and doing some other multitasking stuffs. Multicolor, never use this yet.

The answer to this question is dependent on what application the mouse will be used for.

I have a buddy that spent $300 on a mouse that is essentially a huge trackball big enough to palm and one button. He uses it for 3D work to control the model orientation while he uses a normal mouse to edit the model. It has no other features and most would consider it ridiculously priced for what it does, but for the application he uses it for it is THE perfect mouse.

BTW "Sniping Mode" is basically cutting the DPI in half usually. Just buy any mouse that has on the fly DPI adjustment and you're good to go.

So that's why they call it sniping mode. I just checked them, it says it enables the user to switch the DPI levels on the mouse effortlessly without having the user to change them through the software. But it says you need to configure the DPI value before playing the DPI levels on the mouse.
