204 or 240?

Go to solution Solved by TheSLSAMG,

204-pin DDR3 SODIMMs are laptop memory, whereas 240-pin DDR3 DIMMs are desktop memory. You need 240-pin DDR3 DIMMs.

I wouldn't recommend building an FM2+ machine today, as it is a highly outdated and slow platform.

I need to buy RAM for the rig I'm building but it doesn't specify 204 or 240 on the motherboards amazon.com page, do any of you guys know which I need? https://www.amazon.com/MSI-Micro-Motherboard-A68HM-E33-V2/dp/B00XI4NQBK/ref=sr_1_3?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1520655307&sr=1-3&keywords=msi+motherboard&refinements=p_n_feature_six_browse-bin%3A2057507011

heck.

You know that you can pick up a Ryzen 1600, plus a mobo for $200 total if you're in the US right? About $50 less for a 2200G and a mobo. It makes no real sense to be going with an outdated platform for a new build. If you do need to, for whatever reason, look up the board's specs on the manufacturer's website and it will list what RAM is compatible with each board but they should all be 240 pin as far as I recall.

thanks also do you have any recommendations for DDR3 RAM ps the reason I got such old gear is because I was on an insanely tight 225 dollar budget decided to break the budget with the graphics card though and ill also using the HDD disk drive and RAM from my old Compaq desktop

heck.

Since you'll be using that 2GB DIMM from your old Compaq, a 4GB DIMM such as this one or this one would be reasonable. 6GB of RAM is not a lot, but it should do okay for most games so long as you're closing applications in the background. I wouldn't really spend a lot on DDR3, as it is pretty much obsolete and has been replaced by DDR4 for newer systems.
