Windows 10 VM Question

Hi all,

Ok, so if you have another computer running a windows 10 VM that has mediocre specs, like a low powered CPU with 4GB of RAM, and another computer that was running powerful specs, and you were running a windows 10 VM, would the performance be worse on the VM on the low-spec computer and the performance be better on the powerful computer, does performance on a computer matter when running a VM?

Yes, just think of the VM as its own computer. If it has worse specs then its going to run worse (How much depends on the differences in hardware.)

But the VM has its own specs (like at my school, we have a thing called citrix receiver, and that has a windows 10 VM running from a cloud based server, it has 4GB of ram and an intel Xeon E5-2660v3, ect.) Does the performance as another computer running the VM impact the VMs performance?

Just to double check, you want to host the VM off site, correct?

 

If so then the client PC that is accessing it remotely won't matter much.

Do you mean if you logged into a VM hosted on a more power computer from a crappy computer? It should perform within the limits of the more powerful computer depending on what type of virtualization setup we're talking.

@tjcater is hosted on an Amazon cloud instance, but mostly runs from a Chromebook, Luckily he takes on the characteristics of the EC2 hardware.

@Legendarypoet Yes, that what I mean. Since I am logged into the VM and I log onto it via a crappy computer or vice versa, a powerful computer. Its called Citrix receiver, so I can basically access it from the web browser or by downloading an app from the citrix website and installing it on my computer. 

 

@tjcater Its hosted by the school on the server. So basically I can use it from the web browser or by downloading an app directly to my computer to use the VM that way.

What if I told you I'm co-hosted on both Azure and AWS ?

Yep, no difference with a low end or high end desktop (Provided it isn't super old like pre-2000 of course <- user experience that is, actual compute and the like would be unaffected.)

I have noticed the connection performance and client's OS configuration can effect citrix receiver performance.
