Low PC Performance

Go to solution Solved by Jp158,

Well the problem is fixed no lag (knock on wood). my PC is performing as it should, I guess is was my Riser cable something was messed with it and was causing my GPU to way under perform. Looking for a new cable but as of rn my PC is running like a champ thank to all the replied cya...

Okay, I have been spending months trying to figure out what is wrong with my computer. I believe it has something to do with my GPU but i'm not 100% sure. My computer has been running like a dead animal completly horrible FPS and overall performance. I have spent months trying to figure it out. It all started when I installed this no so good 1tb HD so when my computer was having this problem a month ago I thought is was the HD i put in so I said hell why not and bought a SSD did a clean install of everything and took out that HD and never put it back in. after about a couple of week with my system running fine the lag started again. and from then to now I have reset my bios, did another clean install of windows 10 reinstalled drivers at least 100 times tried different versions. I have been monitoring my hardware and nothing seems out of the ordinary. Temps are not a problem and this system has ran perfect before this so theres not a problem there. Tried new ram nothing. so heres where I am now, my computer will start to lag and a corresponding static pop every no and again will happen in my headphones, sometime my computer will play the game like normal but after a couple minutes the FPS will just plummet and computer slows to a crawl. I have noticed that in task maneger and GPU-Z my usage for my GPU when games will run fine is around 70 - 80 % and the game is smooth and all but when my system starts to lag my GPU usage with spike and stay at 100% or 98 in GPU-Z and fps will be horrible. Now I dont thinks its a problem with a program taking my resources since nothing was running be sides the game task manager and GPU-Z and even with everything but windows and the game running still lagging

I have spent months trying to figure this out and nothing I have reset setting in GeForce, reinstalled everything, updated all drivers when into bios and made sure everything was fine set it to optimized defaults. did so many virus scans with malware bytes and windows defender.

The reason I have stated I believe it my GPU is I pu in a old but working 9800 GT into my system and took out my 1060. with GTA 5 lowest setting possible I was able to get 60 fps with the 9800 GT compared to with my 1060 lowest setting 25 fps, so theirs definitely a GPU problem and I would think thats my GPU is dying but I find it weird that is was working just fine a couple days ago every no and again my PC will work. My GPU also has no problems selve overclocking going all the way to 1900 Mhz no problem even my forcing it to stay at default clock speed it still lags. in GPU-Z my gpu look 100% stable and has no problems at all.

Im really at a lost rn and dont really know what else I can test I have tested everything that I know about computer and im still stuck any thoughts or ideas. Im going to ask one of my friend if I could test some of my hardwarre on his system to maybe see what the problem may be but idk

Specs:

GPU: Zotac GTX 1060 6gb

CPU: i5 7500

RAM: 16gb DDR4

PSU: 750 watt

He says a 750 Watt but it could be extremely unefficient with his 1060

wont cause these symptoms, I run a 1000w on my rig with a 1080 and have no issues

I have noticed a weird thing that happend this morning. I turned off my PC which I dont really do that much and left it off over night letting it rest I tried to turn it on this morning and nothing, the systen turns on but nothing on my two monitors so after checking evey cable and I unplugged my PCI E riser cable and plugged it back in my system, restarted and showed an image. I after turning off unplugged it again and plugged it back in and again no image after another unplug and plug in image was shown. Im going to test my GPU without the riser to see if thats the problem if not im going to test my GPU on my friends system later today Ill keep this updated cause why not

Okay now im even more confused... So I unpluged my riser cable and plugged my GPU into the mobo directly and no lag at all GTA 5 was running fine 80 + fps so I was like okay its the pci e riser so I plugged the riser back in and well the game ran fine again even with the riser installed so now im even more confused. Its did seem like my FPS was not as stable with the riser than connecting direcly to mobo but I was still getting over 70 fps.

Could this bee a bad riser that just fails after a while or just a bad connector. I dont know really, just by that I think maybe just a faulty riser that just messes up sometimes but idk anyone go any thoughts?

remove the riser, what's the point of using it if you only have 1 graphics card?

try undervolting the card and running the furmark 8x MSAA test for an hour at full screen, if it fails or lags there's something wrong with A) mobo, or B) graphics card

My case is made to have a riser for the card to be up right

So right now Im running my PC without the riser cable will update in like an hour of gaming on GTA 5 so far no lag at all

What computer case are you using?

Are you using a rise that was included with the case, or some random riser you bought separately?

Also, question about the riser cable...

Is it a long or short cable?

Is the cable unshielded (e.g. some low quality one)?

Thermaltake core P3 is my case. and I bought the riser cable separate its a long one and its shielded and so far after playing for a for a couple hours my PC is running fine so I believe it was the cable looks like I need a new one any recommendations for a cable I bought mine from amazon its made by EZDIY.
