Matching Laptop Memory?

I'm trying to upgrade a friends laptop as a surprise. The laptop has 1 4gb stick and I want to ad 4 more gigs, but I don't know exactly what stick it is. Do they need to mach perfectly or is having the same speed and such good enough

roughly what year is it from, and does it even have a sodimm slot? most laptops have soldered ram.

usally having the same speed is good enough.  You dont need the same exact brand

I upgraded my ultrabook from 4gb to 8gb a few years back. The original stick was samsung and the replacement was kingston. The speeds were both 2133mhz ddr3 and i've never had issues since.

That's good, you can just buy a sodimm stick of the same speed and capacity and stick it in.
