Hey guys, I got a free early 2011 macbook pro from my relatives who didn't want it anymore. It came with 2 4gb sticks of ddr3 strontium mac memory,. When I turned it on, it gave 3 beeps, indicating that there was no ram installed. It turns out that it could only start up with only 1 stick of ram. If I inserted 2 it will start beeping again. Swapping around the ram cards won't work either. Both ram cards seem to be able to work as the mac can start with either one of them. But after I got the Mac to start up with a single stick of 4gb ram, it got stuck with an empty loading bar. The furthest I got was at around slightly less than half of the loading bar. This macbook was upgraded to a 256gb crucial mx100 ssd which worked before. I couldn't find any recovery partitions. It got wouldn't boot into recovery. Got stuck at the apple logo at internet recovery after the loading bar finished, resetting smc or pram didn't work. Safe mode didn't either. I'm now trying to find a recovery disc which supposedly has either osx mavericks or snow leopard on it. But the ram issue bugs me a lot. Can someone please help me? My relatives sold the original 2 2gb sticks of ram and I only have DDR4 ram cards with me right now.

Try switching RAM into two different slots. One of the slots might be broken.

I already tried that. Didn't work at all.

Odd. You said it was special mac memory? I had a early 2011 macbook myself back in the day, and I upgraded it with off the shelf corsair dominator 16gb kit and an SSD, had no problems.

Yea it was ddr3 memory specifically made for macs. I think it was upgraded somewhere in 2013. Along with the crucial ssd.

Do you have different DDR3 sodimms? Try with standard modules or borrow from someone who has ddr3 sodimms.

I found a stick of 8gb ram. But the MAC can't support any more than that. It booted up just fine but won't after inserting another stick (beeps again). I have to put that stick of ram back into my dell later on. Seems to be a problem with the motherboard or dual channel ram.

Yeah. Seems that you will have to run it with a single stick. That old of a laptop isn't worth reparing.
