This is the first product of my new addiction. I've been in the IT field for years, I started with desktop support and advanced my way to being on the track to becoming a programmer. A hobby (well, previous hobby now) of mine is taking the most destroyed phones I could find on eBay, bring them back to life, and mod them in a way that improves their design. So, what does someone like me have in terms of computers?

Well, my go to for the past almost-decade has been to buy an early Intel MacBook, wipe OS X off it, then run it as a Windows machine. My pair of MacBooks rocked at running Windows 10 and could even play 2007 and older games without too much issue. However, one of my other passions often bumped into my old tech. I can run FSX on my MacBooks...on pretty much ultra low (save for aircraft textures). Well, that's no fun. So, I decided to build myself a computer! I wanted a PC that could play FSX without too many issues. At the same time, I wanted the PC to be able to play various AAA games and have a rather distinctive look.

Enter the DC-10-50TI. When thinking about potential nomenclature, I decided upon [computer thing] + [name of aircraft]. My creative ex girlfriend came up with using the GPU, thus, my working nomenclature! This computer combined one of my favourite trijets (DC-10) with the GTX 1050TI. (Since I've upgraded the GPU to a GTX 1060, it's now called the "DC-10-60".)

In all honesty, the benchmark for this PC to meet was to be able to get a high frame rate playing FSX while on High or Ultra. I also intended it to be no more than $600, but I ended up just tossing out the budget limitation once I started building it. The original version of this build was completed roughly a week after Cyber Monday in 2017.

Some notes from the original build:

  • I had some Windows 7 product keys laying around and tried installing Windows 7 for the Windows 10 Assistive Tech upgrade path. If you intend on using Windows 7 for any reason, the USB ports will not work. The Ryzen 1300X and ASRock AB350M Pro4 are not Windows 7 friendly and will fight you every step of the way.
  • I eventually discovered that a Windows 10 ISO will take a Windows 7 Product Key for a valid key. I'm not sure why this is the case or if it still applies in 2018.
  • The case only comes with one fan even though the ad clearly says two. I bought a second fan from eBay for cheap.

  • The case - while well made for the price - has awkwardly sized screw holes for the front fan. I ended up using black zip ties.

  • The Enermax fan had a defect that caused the blades to rub on the ducting. I shaved the blades down 1mm and that resolved the issue.

  • The how-to guide that comes with the mobo will be more useful to "wiring" the front panel than the guide that comes with the case.

  • The Ajazz mouse is nice and heavy, however the RGB software that it comes with is only in Chinese. Thankfully the menus are really straightforward so that's not too much of an issue.
  • I admit, I'm a bit of a mess with cable management. I'm still learning!
  • I recommend using the SSD for the OS and simulation games, the regular HDD can handle everything else.
  • I'm not sure how economical of a build it is now, I built it during the Black Friday weekend and Cyber Monday when almost all of these parts had lower prices.
  • If you're not a fan of the white, the black version of the case can be had for half the price.
  • If you're not a fan of AMD, a good Intel comparable CPU is the i3-7100. Of course, you may have to substitute other parts.

Changes since completion:

  • The GTX 1050TI was sold and replaced with a GTX 1060 3GB.
  • Name changed from "DC-10-50TI" to "DC-10-60" to reflect new GPU.
  • The PSU was swapped out for a better reviewed Apevia Raptor unit.
  • The Enermax front fan was replaced with an Aigo LED ring fan...because why not.
  • RGB strip added into the case for a dash of flair.

Current Parts:

  • AMD Ryzen 1300X
  • ASRock AB350M Pro4 Micro ATX (AM4)
  • Crucial 8GB (1x8) DDR4-2400
  • Sandisk SSD Plus 240GB SSD
  • 1TB Western Digital Caviar Blue 7200RPM
  • Zotac GTX 1060 3GB
  • Asus CD/DVD Reader/Writer
  • TP-Link TL-WN881ND 802.11b/g/n
  • AigoDIY Ring Fan - Pink
  • Apevia ATX-RP450W Raptor 450W Power Supply
  • Ajazz GT RGB mouse
  • EagleTec KG011-RGB
  • Deepcool Tesseract SW - White, added a second Deepcool-branded case fan from eBay.

Note: The first LED picture is before I swapped the fan and added the LED strip (a generic molex strip with remote from Amazon).

If you like this, stay tuned, I have a mini-itx and a stx build coming up! The stx is the one I'm most excited about as I'm implementing a weird mod to it. ;)

I admit it is about that bad. lol I promise my next build will be better! I'll also find a way to clean this one up. Seems I have a knack for choosing cases that only offer zip-ties for management.

Of course, one of the few sites I cannot visit on this network. I will take a look at this when I get home, thank you!
