need help understanding PCIE usage

Go to solution Solved by Dujith,

Yes and yes.

And like i said: Even if the m2 would eat up CPU lanes it would not matter anyway ;)

Hi folks,

I'm looking to add a m.2 nvme ssd, i have a question regarding the PCIE lanes usage, 6700k have 16 lanes. am i right to say that my gpu takes up 16 lanes since there's no any other hardware taking up the lanes? if so, if i were to add a m.2 ssd which would use 4 pcie lanes, will my gpu use up the remaining 12 lanes or down to 8 lanes? how much would it affect the gpu performance? much appreciated with any input!

rig,

6700k

Asus Maximus Hero VIII

980ti HOF

500gb ssd

Your motherboard has the Z170 chipset. So that means that it has a DMI-3.0 for the rest of the stuff

So 16 lanes (max of your CPU) go to the PCIE slots AND a DMI-3.0 which is a PCIE 4x 3.0 connection.

The m2 SSD will be controlled by the chipset and not the CPU so you will have all the lanes for the GPU. That being said its kind of a moot point as the 980ti cannot even use up 8x :D . Heck even a 1080 wont do that.

thanks for the input! so basically, the m2 ssd will only be using the PCIE from the motherboard yea? so there's pretty much nothing for me to worry about?
