Getting ready to order, help and tips appreciated.

Possum

Planning a new build and could use recommendations, tips and tricks. I haven't been keeping up on hardware for quite a few years.

I'm upgrading because my old comp is rather old with motherboard, CPU and RAM from 2010. I've upgraded the GPU twice since then (980 at the moment) and added SSDs.

New gaming rig - Main use will be playing games and just surfing the web, watching videos etc.

Playing on my Asus PG279Q ROG Swift, so 2560x1440 at 165 mhz. Only running the one monitor at the moment as I gave my other one to my GF, but will be running another just for browsing and videos in the future.

Playing PUBG smoothly is the fotm goal, but gaming in general at a nice, high smooth framerate is the general goal.

I also want to build a small, and preferably quiet rig.

I'm in Norway, but budget is around the equivalent of 2500 $. A little over is no sweat.

Peripherals and extra storage will be moved from my current rig (2 SSDs).

biggest thing I can recommend is to make sure you double check the QVL list from your motherboard manufacture to ensure the ram is compatible. With Ryzen this is a MUST DO before ordering. if its on there, then you are good to go in my book.

Higher end Ryzen motherboards and CPUs are pretty much fixed with Agesa 1006 on Hynix, up to ~3000-3200MHz

I'm at NOK 23 300 now from Komplett.no, and I don't want to push it much beyond that.

I can push it down to 22 000 if I order from several vendors.

not true. Pauls Hardware had a build he did in either Nov or Dec where he was planning to include Trident RGB memory that he couldnt because the board would not post with them in there. With Ryzen you need to follow the QVL list much more so than any other chip lineup out there.

Yep. It's there. On the bottom of the list of course, and god forbid they actually sort it by vendor >:(

For gaming, you'll want Coffee. Even the 1800X lags behind the 8400 in a lot of titles. You should be able to get the 8700 or 8700K (making a list on Prisjakt, checking it rn).

An NVMe drive won't improve anything. It won't help with Windows boot times and game load times.

Something like this? There is a B-die Trident Z kit for 2500kr, if you want that.

The H400i build? That's curious, because the only 32GB kits on the QVL for the Pro4M are 8GB sticks. And the kit he swapped in isn't on the QVL either. And dual rank Hynix kits are among the worst for compatibility.

Some luck, but mostly fixed, that's an anomaly.
