Best CPU for Software Development + Gaming?

Hello!  I am planning a build for the future, and am thinking of what processor I should go with.  I want to game on this computer but I will probably also be doing a bunch of programming too, so I was wondering what CPU would be best optimized for this kind of build?

*Edit: the build budget will be ~$2000 USD

Hey! Do you have a budget? If money's not an issue I'd put you on a 12 or 16 core Threadripper, but if it is I'd give you an i7-8700K or for less a Ryzen 7 or Ryzen 5

We have a NEW and GLORIOUSER-ER-ER PSU Tier List Now. (dammit @LukeSavenije stop coming up with new ones)

You can check out the old one that gave joy to so many across the land here

Computer having a hard time powering on? Troubleshoot it with this guide. (Currently looking for suggestions to update it into the context of <current year> and make it its own thread)

My job will most likely involve programming, possibly some virtualization and the such.  I am currently working on a Bachelor's in CS.

It depends on the software development you'll be doing. If you're doing primarily smaller projects, CPU power is a non-factor. If you're going to do something like complicated applications, then something with more cores is better (mostly to lower compiling times)

I only half answered your question, my bad.

Not really sure specific types of programming, but I do plan to possibly make games in my free time or be an indie dev at some point.

I will probably be doing bigger projects down the road.  For the time being they are smaller but I might want to experiment with some bigger projects on my own.

I doubt you'll need that much processing power (I could be 100% wrong) So an 8700k + 1080ti 16gb of 3200+ ram should fit well. But keep in mind I could be wrong and something like a Threadripper would be much better/

It's gonna depend on your compiler. Can it use the 24 threads to compile code? If yes - threadripper's the choice. Otherwise grab a 8700K. I'm sure you'll get parts lists very soon :P

I'd say you probably can just squeeze out the Threadripper 1920X, but damn GPU prices are stupid high right now (ethereum price is stupid high as well so makes sense).
