Hi. About a year ago, I bought a weak, sturdy, thin-and-light laptop with good battery life, on which I installed Ubuntu. I only use it for classes, which means it spends several weeks doing absolutely nothing twice a year. I know li-ion batteries tend to degrade when they reach very low charge levels, but I'm also aware of the fact that a laptop that stays plugged in all the time always depletes a few percents of its battery, charges again, and then repeats the process, thus wearing it down. So, what would be the best choice for storing a laptop for more than a month? Should I charge it to 100% and leave it unplugged, or keep it plugged in at all times like LMG seems to do?

it is best to long-term store li-ion batteries at around 50%.

I know 50% is best, but I reckon it's not going to stay at 50% if I leave it unplugged for more than a month.

also newer laptops actually power directly from AC power when the internal batteries are fully charged.

I've read that somewhere, but I'm not sure I understand. It's always charged at 100% whenever I open it, which means it has to go through some kind of charge and discharge cycle when it's plugged in and not in use, since batteries are supposed to deplete even when the computer is turned off. Right?

EDIT: I could have found that out myself apparently. Wikipedia's page on LIB states that they have an average discharge rate of 2 to 3% per month, which means that there is theoritically no reason to worry.

it will when the laptop is shut down

many devices trickle charge as the percentage gets closer to 100%. basically it's reaching the maximum capacity of the battery. when it reaches maximum capacity it can hold that charge for a while, hence why when the battery remaining shows full, it's not really 100%.
