Hi! I just got my first server but I don't have Windows Server yet. I can't afford it right now but I got a copy of 8.1 Pro. I know there are some performance differences between Windows and Windows Server but I was wondering, can I tweak the 8.1 settings to get the same or similar performance on server tasks I would with Windows Server (e.g. background VMs)? If so, please give me some indications. Thank you.

The very short answer is no.

A longer answer is again no but it have some explication :). You just can't run windows 8.1 on i3 or Pentium just like you can run other OS for NAS or servers. Those OSs are made to maximize the performance => better performance with low-end components OR kick-ass performance with server grade, very expensive components.

P.S. PM me where are you from :) if my guess is right I can explain you more and easy. It is not polite to talk here an non-international language xD

Nope, sorry. But even there was some tweaking, do you thing we wouldn't done it when Win8.1 was released to be able to get more performance ? Now, I've searched on Google and I've found this . You may do that, and lets say we get some improvements but where do you want to get from there? It will still use a lot of compute power........

P.S. ro? xD

I think this is what you are referring to http://www.thewindowsclub.com/processor-scheduling-in-windows-7-8 - regualr windows defaults to Programs while Server defaults to Background Tasks. Honestly in my experience there is no difference unless you actually hit >90% CPU for extended periods of time.

Looking to buy GTX690, other multi-GPU cards, or single-slot graphics cards:

Yeah. I've found that too. What I meant was by running a lite OS like the ones for servers and VM a Win 10 is lighter in every way than running 2 Win 10 in the same time. Beside that in idle, when the most of the background programs and process are running, you can see how much actually it uses. Right now I have 2% CPU usage with 12 chrome tabs and spotify running in background + 98 background process + 89 windows process. What do you want to squeeze more from that? And what I've meant by my previous posts was the fact that you need a powerful machine to run Win 8.1 and play a game and have a VM with windows 10 playing the same game.

Consider the fact that by using Win 8.1 to VM another OS you can't use prioritized hardware like GPU, keyboard meaning 2 people 1 PC will not be an option for you.

(the last thing was in another language that I presume salexandru does speak)
