Windows randomly hangs

LawlBot

I'm not sure what happened to my computer. Every so often windows just freezes up and I get a strange window not responding dialog box coming up. Not the normal one that says "Close Program " or "Wait for program to respond". A different one that has a button that says end process...This seems to be happening with almost any program my PC runs. It never used to do this and its a pretty new PC. Could it be a hardware issue or did I install a virus or something. I cant really figure this one out :(

First thing I'd do is a memory check.  Download memtest86, boot from a flash drive, and check your memory out.

Second, if you're overclocked, I'd dial that back a bit and see if that improves the situation.

If memory tests good, and dialing back the overclock doesn't work, you probably just need to slick the boot drive and reinstall windows.

It would be useful to have a picture of the error message, or at least know exactly what it says. Check everything that @zombienerd suggested and try to recall if you had just installed or changed something when it started happening.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

sudo chmod -R 000 /*

I am not overclocked, I will try running mem test

I think it might be a windows issue because now what it's doing is all my windows completely freeze, however I can still move around my cursor and the cursor had the loading animation on it while this is happening. Very strange.

Have you updated the BIOS and installed the latest AMD chipset drivers, which came out a couple of weeks ago? Also, is this a clean OS install, or an upgrade/clone of an existing OS on another system?

What is the program in the window that is not responding right behind the message?

  • 4 weeks later...

In case anyone has a similar issue. I fixed it. The issue ended up being a bad sata cable. Very strange
