You should be able to switch it without issue, Dell made Optiplex 780s with Q6600s.

At stock speeds, the Q6600 will perform better in applications that rely on core count. However the E8400 is higher clocked from the factory, so it will perform better in applications that are more concerned with single core performance.

 

 

You can perform a modification like the one above to make the Q6600 run at 3GHz, making it nearly as good as the E8400 at single core workloads.

The Optiplex 780 had a few different motherboards installed.  I have one that I use for a media server, and I cannot upgrade the Core 2 Duo to a Quad, as the motherboard was the wrong revision.  The BIOS would not support it.

 

You'd need to open the case and check the part number on the motherboard, then reference Dell's support to see the Supported CPU listings.

yeah of course, it will work since dell also makes numerous optiplex with q6600

-Frequencies DON'T represent everything and in many cases that is true (referring to Individual CPU Clocks).

it should work but worst case if it doesn't you just replace the CPU with the E8400 and be on your merry way 

 

i threw a 775 xeon(basically a Q6600 with ECC support) into a lenovo prebuilt and it fired right up even though it wasnt on their CPU upgrade list
