How to test new HDD before Using

So I have a 3Tb Red that I want to use in a server. Can I use an external HDD dock to run somethings on it first to test it overnight before using in a server? I want to use the dock so I don't have to open up the server yet. If this is ok, what software should I use?

Yes you can hook it externally.
