thanks again GB i'm just gonna re install cause i'm getting groggys and i'd rather just start with a fresh install of windows cause I got enough on my plate thanks to the holidays being in 2 days.

anything I should know other then the back up of data?

Nothing comes to mind at the moment. Just be sure the data is outside of your PC (external drive, disk, or something, as you'll need to format the drive where Windows is installed, so everything will be gone forever). Take your time for your backup. Make SURE you have everything as once gone, it is gone. Recovery tool won't help you.

Once you re-install Windows, TAKE YOUR TIME. Don't rush things.

Do it right. Don't start 20 setups at the same time, and things like that, and you'll just end up with problems.

If you clean install Windows at night, be aware that Windows Out Of the Box experience (that is the setup process after Windows is installed to get you setup (create your account, connect to wifi if you are not connected via Ethernet, etc.)), now talks (Cortana). So, be sure your speakers are turned off, or you have your headphones plugged in. :)

You may look into backing up your Steam games, if you can' re-download them (say you have a limit), or don't want to re download them.

Please note that if you do, once you install Steam, and restore your games, and run Steam for the first time, games might show as if they are not downloaded. Just run the game, Steam will act like it is downloading the game again, but assuming it was restored properly, it will just scan to make sure that all files are there, and that you have the latest version of the game. It is basically comparing file signatures with its severs, and re-download or download anything bad, that needs updated or missing  Then it will install, if needs to be, any extra components like DirectX runtime libraries, and the game should start.

ok its been a long time sense I posted on here requesting help (the last issue I has was dells damn tech support BS) anyway. over the last 3 days windows has been trying and failing to install the last 2 major updates to the OS even with windows update assistant. windows 10 version 1607 and 1703. another major point is I've never updated my system sense the creator update (it just wouldn't tell me there was a new OS build) so I didn't think anything of it other then it was just some minor bug fixes that didn't need restarting ya fat chance but still.

I don't know if it has to do with dells software tools or what but ever sense they replaced my wireless card my PC hasn't updated windows. when I try and reset my pc well that fails also (i'm trying to save my files cause my pc was orginaly a windows 7 and I was part of the first wave to upgrade to windows 10)  sense I don't have a windows 10 install disc i'm kind of stuck in a loop here with windows trying to constantly failing to update if ya'll need anymore info let me know

Thanks,

DDOking.

Update:

So i'm updating this thread on the OP's post (yes its me)

  • I just did a clean install
    • my system is fully up to date on the windows side.
  • re installed steam and chrome
    • currently installing the backups I made before I made the thread as nothing has changed in the games themself
  • updating my drivers for my other periferal's is next
  • then getting malware bytes anti malware back
  • avast antivirus
  • then my other programs.

to anyone who is running into a similar problem as I did with windows not updating my advice to you is first make sure all your important files are backed up I never saved any file of any kind that wasn't a program to my OS drive i've always used at least 2 drives in my system (currently running with 3 drives) and saved to those instead of on my OS drive just in case shit hits the fan.

also make sure you get the ISO from microsoft as GB said in this thread wait for all the updates to finish this WILL TAKE SEVERAL RESTARTS and 2 hours to complete  at the minium so set aside some time. and keep your eye open for errors and if you must do a double clean install like I did to make sure that the OS is fresh ( reformat 2x then install)

thanks for the help again GB my system is all set for now :P

Based on what Windows says, you don't even have the Anniversary Update. So you are WAY behind.

Here is what you do, you can upgrade Windows 10 (what ever version) to Windows 10 latest version, the same way you can upgrade Windows 7 or 8 to Windows 10.

So all you need to do, is go here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/software-download/windows10

Click on the blue button "Download Tool Now", run it, and follow the wizard.

Just make sure, before starting, that:

  • All the drivers of your system are fully updated (sound, GPU, motherboard chipset, printer, etc.)
  • If you have an Anti-virus and other security software other than the built-in Windows Defender one active, uninstall it/them (you can install it/them back after you upgraded). Don't just disable it/them. It has been reported that some of them false detect the upgrade process as an attack and tries to stop it, and you'll end up with a failed upgrade install, or broken OS.

Keep note to expect failure if:

  • The system previously had a virus actually installed and the system was not re-installed. While they are many types of viruses an malware, some modify system files. Anti-virus only removes infection, and doesn't actually repair system files.
  • Registry cleaner was used (on upgrades is usually where error start to shows from a registry cleaner that did a poor job). They are no point in doing that in any case.

Windows, or your drive got corrupted. If it is your drive, it is either failing, faulty, or bad luck (consumer hardware reliability of operation is ~97%. A format and clean install of everything might fix the problem and never see the light of day).

If it is Windows, then you probably use some poorly coded system teak tool, or moved files, folder around that should not be moved, or broken registry values (registery cleaner? System tweak tool?)

I got the download from (http://download.microsoft.com/download/F/2/4/F24D0C03-4181-4E5B-A23B-5C3A6B5974E3/apps.diagcab) there the error hasn't showed up sense.

if its the drive then I guess its getting worn out (got the PC back in 2015 so the OS drive is only 2 years old as far as I know) I have an older drive that I full encryted that checks first if anything is installed (fails cause well I reformated that one and it acts like a kid blocker for the 4 year olds) don't know if that would cause the reset to fail.

as far as my registry cleaner I use advanced system care and run a full scanne every 4 months

Remove the encrypted drive, and now try.

If that doesn't help, then probably your registry cleaner. Please do not use registry cleaners. There is no point. A cleaner have NO IDEA if data stored inside in the registry is being used or not. It does guess works, and many times it is wrong. The registry is a database. The whole point/goal of a database, is that accessing data is super fast, and always consistent. In addition, the entire databases doesn't need to be in RAM either. only parts of it, minimizing RAM impact. This is why, for example, this forum is not getting slower at every posts being added on thread, nor ever lacks RAM because of added posts. The whole concept of a database is really cleaver in the computer space.

In which case, there is nothing you can do, but backup all your data, and do a clean install of Windows (if you use Media Creation Tool linked above, pick "for another computer", even if it is the same one, to prepare a disk or USB flash drive, restart the system to boot form it, and follow the wizard. You'll end up with the latest version of Windows 10. Windows 10 will also detect the product key stored in your Dell computer UEFI chip and take care of everything).

Oh to add. Once you are logged in into your account, note that Windows is STILL very active at settings up your PC and even your account.

Don't start uninstalling built-in apps and such. They are being updated, and will just come back and annoy you, and might break stuff.

Just wait. You can install Chrome or Firefox if you don't use Edge, you can check for updates, you can start installing drivers from Dell website if Windows update doesn't detect anything missing or something is not working right (you can also see Device Manager for any "!" icon on a device). Once that is all done, and your system has been restarted, and you checked again for updates just to be sure. Start the Store app, click on the "..." button, go to Download and Update, and hit the "Get update" button. Let it scan and update all apps, even those you plan to remove, if any.  Let it do its thing.

Once all is done, and everything is great. Now, you can start installing your programs and stuff, and customize Windows, and once everything is perfect, now you can start restoring your backups. Keep your backup just in case of failure.

Once all done, you can setup your Active Hours so that Windows update on you at the wrong time. It is under Start > Settings (gear icon) > Update & Security > Windows update > Change active hours.

You can also set Windows maintenance schedule under: Start > type: maintenance > pick: Maintenance & security > expand Maintenance > Change maintenance settings > pick a time. Keep in mind the blue link next to it to manually start it. Some people like to disable Sleep of their system for the first night, hit that "Start maintenance" link, let it do its thing over night. And by morning, for sure it is done by a long time now, and they turn back on Sleep, and now they know their PC is really ready.

Spend time rediscovering Windows 10, LOTS has changed since your version. Even the Settings panel. So, have fun! :D
