Hello,

My friend is having some problems with his Windows 10 Installation. The SSD is a Samsung 850 EVO 250GB and is detected in the BIOS.

The problem he's having is shown on the screenshots. Should he go to the motherboard website? Or something? Because it says that it couldn't load any drives and we need to load a driver.

Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Yep, turn off CSM (compatibility support module) for Windows 10. That is required for UEFI systems. You would only turn it off for an older, non-UEFI OS like Win7.

Also turn on Secure Boot and Fast Boot.

Thanks, we'll try that right now :P

Don't turn on secure boot. By leaving it on it can cause some problems for windows if you need to pull the boot drive out and test on a different PC. I always leave it off.

Secure boot was created to prevent people from installing linux alongside windows on crappy HP and dell laptops with no option to disable secure boot as far as i'm concerned

Well, then what should we do? He just wants to install Windows 10 and he'll probably leave the drive there and he's not gonna install Linux or any other O.S. Should we just disable CSM?

Not true, Secure Boot is a feature of UEFI, and should cause no issues if used properly. It only essentially secures the handoff between BIOS and the OS boot manager. I have a good doc on it if I can find it.

EDIT: these two docs from MS do a pretty good job of explaining what Secure Boot is and isn't: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/threat-protection/secure-the-windows-10-boot-process and https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/b8/2011/09/22/protecting-the-pre-os-environment-with-uefi/

I did have a better one though (showing what the boot process would look like with multi-OS and other specific setups), just can't find it right now.

You CAN make any hardware changes without issues. I have a SSD I took from an HP motherboard with Secure Boot, transferred it to a ASUS board with secure boot, no issues at all.

Every HP system (laptop and desktop) ever made (they started including with UEFI in 2012) has the option to disable secure boot, but there is never any need to. Linux can be installed alongside Windows 10 with secure boot, as long as you use a boot manager that support UEFI (Windows Boot Manager).

Also, he can't turn on secure boot anyway. Should he just disable CSM and enable Fast boot?

Yeah you shouldn't NEED secure boot. But there's usually no reason to turn it off.

But CSM does need to be disabled on UEFI systems, otherwise it will not detect and boot GPT drives (which Windows 10 uses).

Fast Boot is exactly what it says, it speeds up boot times. Optional, no real reason to disable.

@DOGC_Kyle @CUDA_Cores He disabled the option CSM and enabled Fastboot. He says that it says the same thing... Also he says that it now has the USB option

does BIOS show anything different? It should list the SSD as UEFI.

Also are you using a Win10 media from the official Media Creation Tool (either a USB created directly within the tool, or a DVD)?

Also, now in the BIOS it only detects the USB and it doesn't show the SSD...: https://imgur.com/a/kluVn

He's using a flash drive and he downloaded the media creation tool from Microsoft.

sorry, misread the original screen, it SHOULD have disappeared from that BIOS screen.

The drive would disappear from that screen because it is no longer a UEFI boot option (the only reason it showed before, is legacy devices don't report to the BIOS if they are bootable, therefore BIOS must allow booting to all legacy devices). But it should still show under a device list (likely elsewhere in the BIOS) with the option to run SMART test and similar options.

And the Windows installer doesn't detect it at all? That is the only part that seems unusual. Is there any sort of legacy vs. UEFI boot option for the USB? I mean there shouldn't, because CSM is disabled, but not really sure why it wouldn't detect the drive.

Hmm... He mentioned that he did the diskpart command or something similar and he didn't see any drives... I'll ask him if he sees any legacy or UEFI boot option for the USB

@CUDA_Cores Also, @DOGC_Kyle, he says that the USB flash drive only has UEFI mode and if he turns on csm it displays UEFI and Legacy options
