Included with my s340 elite are two fans for exhaust at the top and back. The fan cables run through the back and both end in what looks like a molex connector with two out of four pins. Where do I plug this in?

Is your PSU modular? If so there should be a molex cable in the packaging. if not, your PSU will have a dedicated molex single cable or a tree for multiple fans.

My psu has a molex cable. Should i plug the fans into it?

If you trace the cables they should also have either a 3 or 4 pin connector for you to connect the fans to your motherboard, or a fan hub/splitter.

So I should take the molex part off or something? This is what it looks like.

No there'll be two cables coming off the fans, that molex is one of them, there should be another thats a small 3 or 4 pin.

I just encountered this in my first build last night which also happened to be in the S340 Elite. My understanding is that if you plug the case fans into the headers instead then you can turn them on and off (possibly only in the BIOS though) but if you connect them to your PSU then they are always on.

Fans with 4 pin connectors allow the system to control speed intelligently.

While we're talking about a build in that case, did you struggle to connect the USB 2 connector? Mine didn't seem to want to go in on my Asus Prime x370 pro board. Also the positioning of the USB 3 header on that board is TERRIBLE for the cutouts!

Do you have a board with a usb 3 header that faces the right side? I helped my friend with that same problems a few days ago, we even removed the cable management bar before realizing that there were two headers on the motherboard and you could use either.

Wait usb 2 or 3? my usb 2 was pretty easy to get in, isn’t it just on the bottom?

Just to clarify my original response, for the PSU option my non-modular EVGA PSU has a molex connection, which is the matching half of your molex Y-cable that the two three pin fan plugs are connected to. You have a choice though for dumb case fans like those supplied in the box whether to use the fan headers on the board for power or the included molex attached to your PSU by attached cable or presumably directly into the back of it if the PSU is modular or semi-modular.

Hope that makes sense. All of this is brand new to me!

Thanks for the tip on the USB 3 header. I'll check it out.

I think that's because they're not PWM (automatically speed controllable) fans.

ok. My case manual says that the fan controller is built in and I should just plug it into my psu, so that’s what i’m going to do. Thank you for the help!

Both are side by side on my board. The 2.0 was hard to get in and those ports on top of the case are not yet working. The 3.0 (and the CPU power to a lesser extent) needed doubling back on themselves at a worrying angle to get through the cable management hole (diagonally to the right of the header on my board). So far I have just run it though the hole for GPU power and across where the SSD plates are to avoid any chance of damaging the header.

I have an unrelated question. I have some other cables and pieces of hardware that came included with my motherboard, can you help me identify any of them?

I'd be interested if I somehow missed a fan controller, but it seemed that the two fans only connected to the molex splitter thing. I'll let you know if I learn any more. Finished the basics of the build about 2am.

The gigabyte thing is a GPU bridge for SLI, I think. Maybe the thin one is some kind of additional front panel cable for the tiny headers? I think I remember reading that the looped one is an SSD power extension cable. Haven't got to that yet because my primary drive is M.2
