Dynamic HDR

Hermanator

With the new HDMI 2.1 standard announced I was wondering what "dynamic HDR" actually is/how it works?

Can current displays with HDR be dynamically changed?

Or is it a feature to be implemented in future HDR displays?

Pretty much everything in the 2.1 spec will require new TVs, output devices, etc. It'll be a while before we see this fully implemented - especially since most TVs don't even have the per-region light change ability to fully keep up with normal HDR properly.

We will likely need new display scalers to take advantage of the features.  I haven't read into dynamic HDR, but my speculation is that instead of defining a colorspace that is globally valid all the time, you can on the fly allocate more bits to a limited colorspace that is only valid for a certain number of frames.  In doing so you get better than 10 bit color without actually drastically increasing the bandwidth requirement so long as you have enough overhead bandwidth to define the colorspace as scenes change.  From the looks of it HDMI 2.1 has bandwidth for days so I don't see this being a problem.
