An ssd would be better for higher pop servers so it can load in the differnet world files faster, the players loading into their parts of the world as well. An ssd is almost always good to have in most any server.

HDD is also for back ups. Minecraft worlds on servers should have a daily/bi-daily back up. And the worlds can get up-to 10GB's in size. So a 10GB world with a different backup every day would need a 1TB HDD.

I didn't say they won't benefit him, but i think he needs something as cheap as possible.

Just go with a SSD only server. But what are the reason for hosting yourself?

paying for a host with 6gb of ram and a decent amount of cpu costs a bit in Australia im currently paying 108 dollars a month so it will balance out

i will fork out the extra money for an ssd if there is a decent benefit

Chunks load faster and stuff. You might as well if you don't need that much storage.

Lel that's exspensive. SSD makes the server run more smooth (especially in minecraft) restarts also take less time.

But remember minedrift servers are ram hungry that's why some server host scales slots in ram

Ask your self if you really need new hardware, go around your house, friends and families house and ask for old computer part it could really cut costs. Look at the mincraft hosts maybe it will be even cheaper. if you want to build hardware @theNejCar answer is perfect

Minecraft servers are usually no larger than 1GB each. or never any larger than 1tb per world. Unless he is running a larger commercial server then the 1tb is highly unnecessary.

I dunno. I have a 10 player world that is 1.1GB. Then again, we had some decently dedicated players that mined everything. One of my friends had a 20x20x20 cube of diamond blocks and I can assure you he wasn't cheating.

Sounds like you either have dedicated players, some crazy mods, or everyone is on creative flying in every direction.
