New gaming PC

I have a budget of around $1300 USD for these parts. I have made a PCpartpicker link to get some suggestions and opinions on what I can change for getting better deals etc. The missing parts on partpicker are because I already have those parts.

 

I will game on 1080/144hz.

If you can, also push a bit for a 7700K.

Dont upgrade to 7th gen. Either 8th gen or Ryzen. Besides going from 4th gen i5 to 7th i5 doesnt yield noticeable performance gains.

For 1080p/144Hz a 1070 should be fine.

 

EDIT: Although you will definitely see better framerates with a 1080 unless you cap your frames at 60

You really should be getting an i7 with a $1300 budget.

As mentioned above, jumping from a 4670k to a 7600k isn't even worth that $300 for mobo and cpu, very minimal performance gain.

Im not trying to upgrade my current PC. Im giving this to my brother and buyig a whole new PC

I dont know whether this 7600k build is going to be yours or your brother's, but it's still a dumb idea to buy 7th gen new. It's already discontinued, so no more new CPUs as upgrades.

i5-8400 to stay within budget to use those glamourous RGB parts. It's not overclockable so some cheap air coolers like the 212 evo will do the job.

looks good but why the 1070ti over 1080? They are like 30$ in price difference

Didn't notice. It's a ~5% difference in terms of performance, so it should be better value. Didn't notice that the Strix cost that little. Usually decent 1080 cards start at ~$520-530, meaning they're not better value for this build.

ah ok, also should i just go for the 8400 over 8600k when i dont care about overclocking it

I think i should go with the 8400 instead of 8600k because I dont care about overclock and I can buy a cheaper motherboard also. Which motherboard would you recommend for it? Also which air cooler would you recommend that doesnt look like ass?

I wouldn't really recommend a cheaper motherboard. The Extreme4 is currently really well priced, costing less than $25 more than the cheapest Z370 motherboard (only those are available for Coffee), and you go from a very decent motherboard to a motherboard that's crap. The stock cooler should be fine for a stock 8400.

I would only change the PSU. The Focus Plus Gold 850W is available for just $70, or you could get the 650W for $55. The 850W model will allow you to run SLI and/or an HEDT platform in the future. If you get a decent PSU, you can use it for ages. The thing has a 10 year warranty.
