Generally with Ryzen, you want the fastest memory you can get at your budget.

But yeah, even an 8GB kit would cost me ~$80 it's crazy

It's insane, mate. I'm not even sure what happened that made even DDR3 prices go up.

There is this 8gb set at new egg for 89.99 but if you can afford the 16gb set It is the better value and 16mb is the recommended amount of ram these days. 8gb is like the minimum

You want as fast of ram as possible for Ryzen, especially anything 3000+ MHz and CL15 or less with Samsung dies.

But for going cheap, these two nice sets of Gskill memory are under 150-160 for 16 gb for the next 4 or 5 days:

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820232546&cm_re=16gb_ddr4-_-20-232-546-_-Product

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231892&cm_re=16gb_ddr4-_-20-231-892-_-Product

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231911&cm_re=16gb_ddr4-_-20-231-911-_-Product - Very good deal IMO.

Though with these sales I really recommend picking up any RAM from Gskill/Corsair that you can find under 180 that's 3000+ MHz, assuming you're getting a motherboard that supports RAM overclocking.

The problem with going on a budget with RAM is that lower speeds will make Ryzen perform as much as 10-15% worse in some modern games / workloads. You don't want to go with 8 GB either as that's basically bare minimum specs at this point, and you would really want dual channel 16 GB for Ryzen. (Most modern games will use 3.5-6 GB of RAM on high settings, factor in Windows 10 and various background processes and you'll be peaking at 95-100% RAM usage all day while playing most games.)

Main Rig: Ryzen 5 1600 (3.8 GHz / 1.32v) -- 16 GB (2x8) G.skill FlareX CL14 3200 -- Nvidia GTX 970 Reference (1475 MHz)

Retired Rig: FX-6300 (4.3 GHz / 1.3v) -- 8 GB (2x4) G.skill Ripjaws DDR3 1600 -- Radeon HD 7770 (1000 MHz)
