I am currently attempting to run ubuntu on an old galaxy s4 at&t that I have been using for a while. I have been using the "Complete Linux Installer" guide which has been pretty straightforward until I was asked to extract the disk image into my root directory. Since ES File Explorer's built in zip program wasn't working, I downloaded the RAR app from rarlab and extracted the disk image into my downloads folder, then attempted to move the extracted folder containing the disk image and md5 sum into my root directory for android using ES File Explorer. Upon reaching about 40% completion, the app seems to crash, and my entire phone system seems to get hung up, not quite frozen but so slow that any input I try to put in is recognized about a minute or so later. After sitting at this stage for about 5 or so minutes, the phone will reboot itself, but still remain hung until I hard reset it. I'm not quite sure why this is happening and any advice on how to solve this problem would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Also: The phone is rooted with towelroot, and is using the safestrap bootloader. In addition, I am using regionlockaway to run a t-mobile sim and triangleaway to remove the alert on startup that tells me i was messing with the system

OK, I don't know anything much about this particular thing. But, I am fairly sure when they ask you to extract into the root, I think they mean the root of the microSD, at least it has always been for most android stuff I have done. So, it's easier to do that on the PC, extract the image directly onto the root of the microSD, I could be wrong but think most phone's have protected writes to the root of the internal memory. I'm pretty certain I have ran into problems before with that... but my memory isn't that great at the best of times, so could well be wrong :P

That's what I would try anyway.

That could work... the only problem is I don't have an SD card in my phone, I'm only using internal storage at the moment. You might be right, however, that even with root access I might not be able to move a large file to it... but I am able to create empty files in the root directory so I'm not sure what else the problem could be. I just need to get a newer android that isn't at&t xD and an sd card of course

Yeah, sorry I can't be of help really with the issue you're having.

If you do decide to go for a new phone though, I can definitely recommend the xaiomi redmi note 4, this is what I have and couldn't be more pleased... especially for this price bracket, at only around $140 or less sometimes, direct from China, I use gearbest and banggood, banggood I find better for phones and less likely to get customs fees as they usually put $30 value on packages.

I'm looking at it and it does look like quite a nice upgrade... however I do love my ability to root and install custom operating systems and/or kernels onto my android phones... have you tried playing around with that on yours?

No, I haven't bothered with this phone yet as it's soo good on the ROM it comes with... it CAN be done though very easily, I researched it before I bought as I also like to root and install TWRP and custom ROMs too.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 Guides, News, & Discussion

Loads of threads, and loads of ROMs available for this phone... I am using the global version as I need band 20 4G where I live.
