I'm currently ripping all my old DVDs and blurays to NAS for streaming using Plex.

However, I need some form of compression, and trans-coding using Handbrake is taking a painful amount of time on my aging i7-4790 system. For one thing it isn't new enough to make use of Quicksync.

I want to build a low-cost rig expressly for reducing trans-code times. I gather, that core counter is the more important factor when using Handbrake, and if that is so, I wonder if I would be better using an older Xeon rather than something newer from Intel or AMDs consumer line-up?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated. I am somewhat of a novice.
