maybe a quad core. also 250fps in which games? 1050ti is good, but not enough for 250fps in for example gta or overwatch.

I would recommend getting a core I7 7700k or 8700k. Also hitting 250 frames in a newer title for example is very hard, i'm pretty sure 2 titans could even hit 250 frames in a newer title. So upgrade to a 1070ti if you can.

upgrade both cpu and gpu if in budget, or get the best gpu now and plan for a cpu upgrade in the future if you don't have enough.

He has $170.

OP- IMO your best option would be to try and find a used card, options are pretty limited with a new one.

The benefit of going used is possibly finding a card better than the 1050 ti for your price range. Maybe along the lines of a 970 if you get lucky. Or even a decent 1060 maybe.

If you can't find something better than a 1050 ti used, I would go with the 1050 ti.
