Hello guys, first of all I hope you are having a great day/night.

Well, I got to be honest with you, I am a huge security s**t, I make everything I use very secured and all that, recently I started to ask myself what is the best browser in regards to security and privacy. I have been using Opera a while now, love that it has build in adblock and vpn but the UI is kinda not my style hahaha. What is by your opinion the best browser to use in regards to privacy and security? Thanks in advance.B|

Any browser should be fine as long as you have a good anti-virus and malware programs. I like chrome, also avast has this “secure browser” it might cost money.

Vivaldi is one of the nicest ones in that regard.

If you really wanna be safe, out of the radar, i would suggest a router level VPN, which is not so easy to do.

Provided the router supports OpenVPN, it's fairly easy to do. You just have to follow the steps in one of the many tutorials that are around. A lot of VPN providers that support OpenVPN have guides available when you download the configuration files.

It's pretty daunting if you're not familiar with VPNs and networking, but in the end, it's just a matter of following some steps. Easiest if the router supports DD-WRT as there's a load of tutorials specifically for DD-WRT.

As with most things, that depends. In any case, you'll definitely want to use an extension like "ublock Origin" to disable scripts. You'll have to "pause" this extension for some sites to work, though. One example is my homeowners insurance website. I can't access policy documents with that plugin running.

If you're avoiding a corporate overlord and PRIVACY is more important, I'd definitely go with Firefox. However, it's historically been quite easy to crack (Ref: Pwn2Own Competition), so if you're browsing "questionable" sites, this is probably not the browser to use.

Otherwise, Chrome is the easy choice if SECURITY is more important. Chrome has historically been difficult to crack (outside of a malicious extension), and many good security features are enabled by default. However, you end up with Google collecting "anonymous" usage data, etc.

Other thoughts for browser security/privacy, in no particular order.

- Disable 3rd party cookies, they provide no real benefit to most users.

- Make sure flash plugins REQUIRE user action to play (or better yet, disable Flash completely)

- Use "Incognito" mode where practical

TL:DR Good security/privacy practices don't happen by accident, and things change all the time. Reference "Security Now" podcast, available on YouTube. Steve Gibson has been in the industry a very long time, and often has very useful information. I normally listen to him at 1.5x speed, while I'm working on other things.
