Building my first PC

Hello everyone,

I'm new here and need little help. I'm building my first pc. It'll be used for gaming, montage, rendering videos. Monitor is 4k. My location is the US and my budget is about $2200(for the parts; Case and other peripherals not included as I already have them). Here's the list I've come up with so far:

PCPartPicker part list: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Vzkg2R

I have some questions and need your advice:

MSI Z370 GAMING PRO CARBON AC OR ASUS ROG Strix Z370-E Gaming ?

MSI 1080 ti gaming x trio OR ASUS 1080 ti strix ?

Toshiba OCZ RD400 Series Solid State Drive PCIe NVMe M.2 256GB with MLC Flash  OR Samsung - 960 EVO 250GB M.2-2280 Solid State Drive ?

I'm planning to oc the cpu at some point. But I feel like Kraken x52 is overkill, and a bit expensive. what do you guys think?

I'll really appreciate any advice. Thank you guys in advance.

You need a case for a PC, i'd check out Phanteks Enthoo Pro M TG.

You could save some cash for components by going with Ryzen because CPU doesnt really matter in 4K anyways and it has great rendering performance and is easier to cool.

Kraken X52 is essential for 8700K, especially OC.

For the GPU, I'd go Strix but check out EVGA 1080Ti FTW3.

I did the list with Ryzen (preparing for a raid of pissed-off intel fanboys)

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: AMD - Ryzen 7 1700X 3.4GHz 8-Core Processor  ($298.89 @ OutletPC)
CPU Cooler: Corsair - H100i v2 70.7 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler  ($99.99 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: Asus - STRIX X370-F GAMING ATX AM4 Motherboard  ($174.49 @ SuperBiiz)
Memory: G.Skill - Trident Z 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3200 Memory  ($195.86 @ OutletPC)
Storage: Samsung - 960 EVO 250GB M.2-2280 Solid State Drive  ($124.99 @ Amazon)
Storage: Crucial - MX300 525GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  ($144.89 @ OutletPC)
Video Card: EVGA - GeForce GTX 1080 Ti 11GB FTW3 GAMING iCX Video Card  ($769.99 @ Newegg)
Case: Phanteks - Enthoo Pro M Tempered Glass (Black) ATX Mid Tower Case  ($109.98 @ Newegg)
Power Supply: Corsair - RMx 750W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply  ($109.89 @ Amazon)

Don't buy Apple M1 computers with 8GB of RAM

I would recommend an ASUS board because they do have excellent overclocking (if you plan to push it a bit more a Maximus X Hero) altho I think the MSI Z370 Gaming Pro is also a good board. (Never used it but from what I heard is good)

If you are getting a Asus board then getting a Asus GPU is nice for Audio Sync (But if you find a good deal then go for it, for example, Massdrop has a deal on a MSI 1080 ti gaming x trio)

I would recommend the Samsung 960 Evo because from what I know it's faster and you can trust Samsung to produce a good SSD.

You could have a look at the Corsair Hydro Series (H100i V2 or H115i or a diff one) are generally more worth the money than Kraken series.

PC Specs:

CPU: Intel Core i7-8700k @ 4.7GHz Turbo

PSU: Corsair RM650x

Thanks for the reply bro. I really appreciate it. But to be honest I prefer to go with Intel. As I'll be traveling within the next couple of months and where I'm going Intel is dominant in the market there. (You know just in case something happened).

You have a good point (matching GPU with mobo). Guess I'll wait till black Friday and choose whatever has good deals on it. As you said and after doing some research I couldn't  find major differences. The whole 1080 ti series almost the same in terms of performance. And for the cooling I'll check out the crosair hydro. Thanks for your advice bro. Much appreciated!

Went with additional RAM since a lot of productivity stuff can usually benefit from that but feel free to drop it down to 16GB if you think you'll be fine with that instead.

Swapped the CPU cooler to a bit beefier cooler but wasn't sure if your case can fit a 280mm rad, if it can then go with that.

Dropped the 500GB SSD for some more mass storage.

Swapped the mobo and GPU out for Asus brands, if you want a theme and better lighting control. If you don't care about the GPU then I would drop it for an EVGA SC2 or SC Black card instead.

Changed the PSU out, for a few bucks more you get an 850 watt which will allow you to add a second GPU in the future without needing to swap out the PSU and still leave you OC headroom.

Yea every GPU with 3 fans perform very similarly, differences are only when you have liquid cooling and still aren't that major. Sometimes there is a difference in power with the power plugs (Like having a 6+8 or 8+8) but that doesn't matter much either, anyways it's always just a clock difference which doesn't matter too much. (What matters is cooling to make sure it doesn't throttle but most 1080 Ti's won't throttle unless they don't have air)

Edit: Would like to add I got a Maximus X Hero (Wi-Fi AC) and its been really nice, but do make sure because Z370 is a new platform to look for bios updates especially if you are getting errors regardless of what manufacturer you are going for.

I'm not an Intel fanboy, but I'm going to say It, I wouldn't  go with Ryzen 7. If you were going to buy the parts like today than I would go for Ryzen because coffee lake is hard to find right now. But if you know where to get the 8700k than get that because it out performs the r7.

Do you have an M2 NVMe? Because there are some issues with them in this mobo. Another question did you oc?

And appreciate the advice bro!

I don't have M.2 (because imo it's not worth the price for the performance but that's just my opinion), if there are errors rn then its probably just being how new coffee lake is and might be fixed with a BIOS update (Maybe even ones that is out already). I never OCed past Max Turbo Boost but I will be doing it and have heard good stuff (I don't have a good enough cooler to even reach 4.7Ghz on all 6 cores)

Thanks for the reply bro. I placed my order and should be getting the parts within the next 10 days. SO EXCITED!

for the mobo I ordered Asus Maximux X, because it was just 50 dollars difference in price with the ROG strix and thought hell with it!
