Hi all,

I'm looking to update my computer for Christmas, it was a shop bought computer but I have changed some of the parts.

I'm looking at getting a new CPU, which I would assume I'd need a new motherboard for, and I'll also be getting a new case.

Budget: As close to £200 as possible

I'm not a hardcore gamer at all, I play Counter Strike: GO, Football Manager and a couple of other games that aren't that intensive on the graphics card or CPU.

I'm just looking to get something that will be powerful enough for the money and also last a few years before needing replacing.

So my questions are:

Are all of the below compatible?

Are they value for money or is there better out there?

My current spec is:

OS: Linux Mint 18.2 Cinnamon 64bit

Monitor: BenQ GL2450HM LED TN 24 inch Widescreen Multimedia Monitor (1920 x 1080, 2 ms GTG, VGA, DVI-D, HDMI, Speakers) - Glossy Black

Graphics Card: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1050 Ti 4 GB GDDR5 128 bit Graphics Card (GV-N105TOC-4GD)

PSU: XFX TS Series 430 W Full Wired Power Supply Unit

RAM: 8gb (can't remember the actual specs for this as I'm at work)

Motherboard: FM2-A55M-E33 (MS-7721)

CPU: AMD A8-5600K APU with Radeon HD Graphics x 2

I'm going to look to update my RAM and hard drive some time during next year when I can afford it.

What I'm looking to get:

Case (£35.26): CiT Prism Gaming Case with 2 RGB Front Fans, Side Window and Remote Control - Black

CPU (£98.97): Intel BX80662I36100 Intel Core i3 6100 Skylake Dual-Core 3.7 GHz Processor

Motherboard (£49.50): Asus H81M-PLUS Motherboard (Socket 1150, Intel H81, DDR3, S-ATA 600, Micro ATX, PCI Express 2.0, HDMI, USB 3.0)

Total: £183.73

Appreciate any help you can give me.

Regards,

Steve

your motherboard and cpu are incompatible. the cpu is 1151, and the mobo is 1150. that won't work.

you will also have to get new ram, as 1151 uses ddr4, and your current system is probably ddr3 (CHECK THIS)

Wow that was quick, thanks for all the replies.

I don't have to get these bits, they were just items I found on the internet with decent reviews.

This sounds like a good idea though as I can get someone to get me the case as a Christmas present.

Are AMD CPU's any good as I had heard they're not upto par with Intel?

OK thanks, I'll saved the items so I think I'll go with these.

I assume it's a huge performance improvement over my current AMD CPU (APU)?

Also, I assume again that I'd need to get some thermal paste like the one below for the CPU?

yes, and the stock cooler already has thermal paste.

Ah, I was all set but now you say an Intel Pentium is better?

the pentium is worse than the ryzen 1200, and slightly slower than the i3 6100.
