In practise, I´ve been years without backups.  Raid works really well.

 

I don't trust my important data with anybody other than myself. I make sure to encrypt it before it leaves my network and only store unencrypted versions (i.e. the real time backups) on hardware and networks that I own.

Oh it´s cool to have such hardware and networks.  I´d have to at least double my disk capacity to do the encryption, and it would take ages to transfer the data unless I´d take the disks with me and install them off-site.  So even if I had hardware and networks off-site, it won´t be feasible.
