I just pulled it off (thank you for the advice)... is it now a standard IDE conector?

I believe that there is a smaller standard for IDE connectors in laptops that has pins closer together than they would be in a desktop drive. There should in theory be adapters to normal IDE or USB adapters designed for that (also it may have a name that would help when searching, I don't remember it though).
