So I've got this Raspberry Pi 3 just sitting around collecting dust. I was thinking of using as a plex server with an external HD hooked up to it.

My household is a bit strict, so is there a way to hide most movies or tv shows from other possible users?

Plex Home allows you to setup managed users so you can pick what is shown to who.

If any of your media needs transcoding, you're going to have a bad time with a Raspberry Pi, so you may need to convert media to allow direct play if you have anything that Plex will need to transcode.

What do you mean by transcode exactly? I'm basically converting all my stuff to mp4.

And so you just make different folders for various content and you can modify someones account to only see those folders?

Some file types are not supported for direct play by Plex or by the client device, so will be transcoded to a compatible format on the fly. This is where CPU power is needed for Plex. Things like softsubs (ie. subtitles that are not actually part of the video and can be turned on/off) will require transcoding.

MP4 should work fine for direct play.

Basically, yeah. You can restrict which libraries they can see and you can set restrictions within the libraries (such as only allowing people to see PG movies or something). I'd advise reading through some of the Plex home information in the links I provided, the details of it are provided there.

You can also share only specific folders (libraries) with other accounts without the need for Plex Pass.

So I got the plex setup on the Pi3, which was a bit of a pain. Although now I can't get the pi to mount the HD. I assume the usb 2.0 isn't enough to power the drive? It seems to be spinning, but not entirely sure...
