Making a budget mining rig. Will this GPU MOBO CPU combo work? DELL PRECISION T3500 MOTHERBOARD / XEON W3530@2.80Ghz

Plan on running 2x gtx 1070s (with plans to upgrade to 4 GPUs) with 4gb ddr3 on the mobo/cpu combo and a 850 gold rated PSU. Does anyone see a problem with this older board/cpu and the power I'm looking to harness? Will be using NiceHash, so all I'm really worried about is this thing being as powerful and efficient as possible. Recommendations are totally welcome. Thanks in advance.

I'm trying to budget the REST of the build to offset the cost of the 1070s lol.

also correct me if i am wrong but isnt it impossible to SLI 4 nvidia video cards? Wasnt 3 max?
And AMD can do 4 max? or am i mixing them up.

Also what the hell do u need 2-4 HIGH END video cards for while u have FOUR GB OF RAM????

Oh, I'm not doing SLI...This is a bitcoin mining rig. They all work independent. Also, RAM isn't that important (nor is CPU power)

It's all about the GPUs.

If you say so, i dont really know what bitcoin is but i cant really imagine building a computer with as much power as 2-4 1070 bring with just 4gb of ram.

not a gaming rig

not ram intensive

how much are you getting this dell system for?
i know these precision towers are usually cheap on dellrefurbished.com

but you really dont need a xeon for a mining rig

you should be able to find a cheaper system thats running an i3 or pentium cpu - it will be enough for mining

only thing that you need to figure out is if the motherboards in these systems have enough PCIe slots to hold more video cards (or those usb3.0 to pcie adapters, whatever floats your boat)

It's a package deal...Mobo, ram and CPU for $40. It has 4 slots.

Do you see any reason that the 1070s wouldn't work with it?

i thought videocards need crossfire or sli to work together? or is that only for gaming?

Or does that bitcoing mining thing just use them separately?

No, they can work independently, but it's not useful for gaming.

I already have a gaming rig, this is for mining cryptocurrency.

I dont really see what PCI express ports it has but ideal would be PCI-E 16
PCI 8 is doable anything under that would be kinda of a waste for a card of that caliber

But if u plan to buy a new MOBO see if u can get one that has 4 of the PCI-E 16

No, you don't need the 16 or 8, you just use jumper cables that plug in...This isn't gaming. It's a totally different setup.

Go do a google search for Mining Rigs.

850W will be plenty for 2x GTX 1070.

Should be also fine for 4x GTX 1070 since each of them are pulling 170W each.

But I can't say anything about compatibility between that old motherboard and those new GPUs ...

I would honestly prefer to buy some of those BTC motherboard that can have more than 8 GPUs.

H110 Pro BTC+ for example ... more than enough future proof, and it will 100% work with GTX 1070 and newer GPUs.

The only issue you might have with an older board and cpu combo is that they might not support gpus with uefi bios. The cpu will also use more power at idle. Why don't you go with an am3 system with a athlon ii x2 or Sempron?

No reason, have just spent the last few hours combing through Ebay package deals that had the 4 pci slots...This was the best I found.

40 bucks for a board with the right amount of slots that  comes with a CPU and Ram is pretty good.

My fear is just the compatibility issue. I don't know computers THAT well, but I've built a few, including a NAS.

You can try to google if someone used that bord with new GPUs ...I don't see any particual reason why it wouldn't work, but you can never be 100% sure when it comes to old hardware like this.

I figured 2009 isn't THAT old....I have a more expensive option from 2012 its a Gigabyte GA-F2A55-DS3 s-l1600.jpg

But then I have to go buy a CPU and ram.
