Hi,

so I´m trying to figure out if there is a way to control fans connected to an MSI S0121 that has the optional BMC.

I managed to set thresholds with impitool and have come to understand that these are probably only used to issue warnings for when something goes out of range rather than to control anything.

The spec sheet of the hardware monitoring chip (f71889a) says the chip can control fan speeds by either PWM or by voltage regulation, and that there are several ways by which can be figured out how fast the fan should run.  Apparently this chip is supported by lm-sensors.

I´ve installed lm-sensors, and sensor shows 0 RPM for all fans.  The chip doesn´t seem to have a divisor I could change to get some speed reading.  Ipmitool shows the fan speeds, and they are plausible.  I would like to have the CPU fan run slower.

Is it possible that the fans are not connected to the hardware monitoring chip but to the BMC and remain beyond my control (I can´t set them in the BIOS, either)?  How is this usually done with (simple) server boards that have a BMC?
