You mean a global directory structure for sorting everything?  Probably varies quite a bit from person to person.

 

On that subject, I think the default folders that Windows and many other systems provide steers people in the wrong direction.  The top level that you break things up by shouldn't be the types of files, it should be the event.  Whether you went on a walk and took pictures, or are writing a program, each of these things should be a top level imo, and then within it you organize into the different types of associated media.

 

If you start by breaking into types, what happens when you come back from a trip and you have both pictures and video from the same event?  They get put in separate folders, and then what?  How do you sort from there?  It doesn't make sense.

 

And some file types do support tags, but it's not a global feature in Windows afaik

I use folders in a sort of tree-type config to organize.

 

But if you're looking to get rid of redundant files, there's a great tool called WinDirStat That will scan your files and create a great graphic display of everything. Then you can easily find big files that are taking up too much space.
