there is always the mod mic + headphones option, but what is your budget and what type of sound are you looking for?

Before you buy amp and dac.  My thoughts on the M50x  Ultimate Ears Reference monitor review I might have a thing for audio...

My main Headphones and IEMs:  K612 pro, HD 25 and Ultimate Ears Reference Monitor, HD 580 with HD 600 grills

DAC and AMP: RME ADI 2 DAC

Speakers: Genelec 8040, System Audio SA205

Receiver: Denon AVR-1612

Desktop: R7 1700, GTX 1080  RX 580 8GB and other stuff

Laptop: ThinkPad P50: i7 6820HQ, M2000M. ThinkPad T420s: i7 2640M, NVS 4200M

Well with that budget the world is your oyster more or less. While you can get the gaming variation with the built in mic, you can also use our ModMic (See my signature for my obvious bias and thanks Dackzy for the rec!) and ANY awesome pair of headphones.

This has the upside of generally a lower pricetag overall and better headphones. The downside is you end up with two wires coming down your headphones (one for the mic and one for the headphones). That said, we do supply clips and wraps to keep things neat and tidy, but that is a deal breaker for some so I'm just being up front about it.

Anyway, now you are into the "What sounds best" for the games you play and that's mostly personal preference.

Here's the conundrum: For gaming most things you care about are high and mid range sounds. These include footsteps and nearby gunfire, as examples. Most things that cover up these sounds (wind, distant fire, distant explosions) are low frequency.

This leads me to say "Bright" headphones (clear High and Mids, recessed bass) are best for gaming. BUT bright headphones are the love it or hate it sound. They either are exactly what you need for gaming or they will give you a headache and/or fatigue after listening.

I always default to the DT990 as the gaming headphone you'll either love or hate.

If you can't take the treble of the DT990, then move to a midrange warm sound like the Sennheiser HD 598/599.

That said, given your budget you could go higher in price tag, but as you're just getting started I am of the opinion you should take baby steps. If you don't want to, the Sennheiser HD600 and a decent dac/amp combo like the Schiit Fulla 2 would basically be your end game and cost 500 dollars (not including the mic)

Others may have different recommendations on how to allocate $500... but yeah. DT990 or HD598/99 + ModMic 5 (+ any adapters - you will want a USB adapter for PC/Mac or a Y adapter for console) = ~$300. You could add in that Schiit Fulla to bring it to 400.
