Doom 3 Coop mod?

I just started playing doom3 and holy shit it's fun and so scary so far, which I'm actually surprised at. I really want to play it with my friend like we did in doom 1 but theres no coop. Is there a mod that lets you play the original game with 2 people? or is it just custom maps? Because I'm afraid they wont be as scary/good
