How to force resolution

I just got a 1080 Ti from a Friend and he gave DisplayPort to VGA adapter with it(My monitor has only VGA). Now the problem is that when I connect the GPU and my Monitor, the "biggest" resolution is 1024x768 and it's recommended. Anyway the guy who gave the GPU and adapter told me that he managed to force 1920x1080p native resoliton on his monitor. I can't find anywhere how to do that, I need guidelines. I tried already with Nvidia Control pannel and custom resolutions but it doesn't work. Can anyone help me with this?

PS There aren't any DVI-D to VGA or HDMI to VGA Active converters
