Hello,

So I just built a new pc after many years. I will list the specs below, but essentially I built a new rig from the ground up, except that I used my old hard drives from my previous system. On the old HDD, I updated my windows 7 to windows 10 with a fresh install, wiping everything before I popped it into my new build. The old CPU was running on an intel 2500k (if it matters). Once I built the new rig, I again booted up the pc and did another fresh install of windows 10, wiping everything.

Now the issue, neither my mech keyboard, plugged in via usb works nor does my mouse. The keyboard, when I first plugged it in, without even booting up the system had its caps lock key and screen lock key, lighting up which was bizarre as when my pc was off on my old system it would never light up. At first, the keyboard was working perfectly fine, but the mouse wasn't. The mouse would move about the screen, but I couldn't click on anything. I tried rebooting the computer, but nothing changed. Also, at this point I realized that when my computer would "fall asleep" the mouse nor keyboard couldn't wake it up. So I rebooted and went into the bios, I cant remember exactly what I clicked, but it was something like the keyboard could "unlock or wake up the computer" with any button and the mouse could "wake it up" by moving. I then tried rebooting it and the keyboard was working, but still not the mouse. I then hooked up the internet, realizing that drivers may need to update. So I restarted the pc once again, and after this, neither mouse nor the keyboard work. Is it possible that I "fried" the keyboard somehow? I tried plugging my keyboard into my surface pro 4, but it doesn't work and the mouse just moves around, but can't click anything (after windows 10 updated the drivers).

Sorry for the long post, thought it would be best to write up the whole scenario. I don't have a disc drive, so I can't install a new mobo bios unfortunately.

Rig:

Auros gaming 5

Ryzen 1600 (non-x)

stock cooler

Trident Z 16gb ram

gtx 1080ti

Phantek Evolve ATX

Corsair 1000w

WD 1 tb black drive

Seagate 1.5 tb HDD

3x Samsung 850 evo

Thanks in advance!

@krown If you still have your old pc or even a friend's pc you could try your keyboard and mouse with them.

Also if your mobo has a ps/2 port then you could try using that with an adapter.

I ran it on my surface pro 4 with no luck. I'm gonna try running my friends keyboard with ps/2 adapter to see if that helps.

If it doesn't, what other options do I have? I can't really control my pc even if I were to download the drivers onto a flash drive, I'd have no way to execute it. If I can get a hold of an external disc drive, would installing the mobos CD help?

@krown Have you tried reinstalling your keyboard and mouse's driver?

Also you should try your keyboard and mouse with your friend's Pc and see if they work or not. If they do then it could be some windows hiccup with your Pc.

Reinstalling Windows might help as well if that's the case.

I haven't been able to reinstall the drivers as my keyboard doesn't work. Im gonna try and use my friends keyboard to see if I can update the drivers, if not, I'll try a fresh install of Windows. If I reinstall windows, will the set the bios back to its default setting too?

I'll get back to here, once I get this going.

No the BIOS is a separate thing. There is an option in windows to restore windows itself to stock without you losing your files so do that first instead of a complete wipe.

Here's how you do it:

Quote

Resetting lets you choose whether to keep your files or remove them, and then reinstalls Windows. To get started, go to Settings > Update & security > Reset this PC > Get started and choose an option.

Note

If you can't open Settings, you can get to reset by restarting your PC from the sign-in screen. Press the Windows logo key Windows logo key  +L to get to the sign-in screen, then hold the Shift key down while you select Power  > Restart in the lower-right corner of the screen. After your PC restarts, select Troubleshoot > Reset this PC.

If you can't get to the sign-in screen, use a recovery drive or installation media to reset your PC.

Option What it does
Keep my files
  • Reinstalls Windows 10 and keeps your personal files.
  • Removes apps and drivers you installed.
  • Removes changes you made to settings.
  • Removes any apps your PC manufacturer installed. (If your PC came with Windows 10, apps from your PC manufacturer will be reinstalled.)
Remove everything
  • Reinstalls Windows 10 and removes all your personal files.
  • Removes apps and drivers you installed.
  • Removes changes you made to settings.
  • Removes any apps your PC manufacturer installed. (If your PC came with Windows 10, apps from your PC manufacturer will be reinstalled.)

If you're planning to donate, recycle, or sell your PC, use this option and choose to fully clean the drive. This might take an hour or two, but it makes it harder for other people to recover files you've removed.

Restore factory settings
  • Reinstalls the version of Windows that your PC came with (either Windows 8 or Windows 8.1) and removes your personal files.
  • Removes apps and drivers you installed.
  • Removes changes you made to settings.
  • Reinstalls any apps your PC manufacturer installed on your PC.
This option isn't available on all PCs.

Shorter version if you want to keep your files:

Go to Settings > Update & security > Reset this PC > Get started and choose an option.

This is what gets Removed:

  • Removes apps and drivers you installed.
  • Removes changes you made to settings.
  • Removes any apps your PC manufacturer installed. (If your PC came with Windows 10, apps from your PC manufacturer will be reinstalled.)

All your personal files will be saved though.

If that option doesn't help then you can try a complete reinstall of windows but before all this just see if you can reinstall your mouse and keyboard drivers (Or delete their drivers and plug them in again maybe that can help)
