Hi all

I have a huge issue. I was running my system (see below) in an old case and upgraded to a newer one incl. new fans (2 intake, 2 outtake). I did install everything in the new case. I tried to Overclock the CPU to 3.5Ghz but could not get it to work. However, since then I have a huge freezing issue. My system is freezing at completely random times. Sometimes I cannot boot and it is freezing immediately. 2 days ago, I was able to play Overwatch and the PC was running fine for 4h. Yesterday same problem, freezing in different states.

My System:

  • AMD Phenom II X1090T

  • Scythe Mugen 3 cooler

  • ASRock Extreme 3 (latest BIOS 1.60)

  • 8GB Corsair Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR3 1600Mhz

  • Zotac GTX1070 AMP extreme

  • Samsung 850 EVO with 120GB

  • Be quiet! Pure Power 10 CM 600W

The following solutions I tried but none of them did help or showed any errors:

  • Clean new install of Win 10 CU on my SSD, incl. new drivers for the basic needs (GPU, MoBo, SSD, Keyboard)

  • Power saving options in the BIOS and Windows disabled

  • Checked RAM for defects but no errors detected, also did try to use only one stick

  • Unplug all HDD and USB devices except SSD

  • Reset the Virtual Memory to a higher value (2000-8000MB)

  • Did run Disk Check on all drives

  • Did run System File checker

  • Did reapply new thermal paste because mine was +5 years old

  • Did vary the RAM speed in the BIOS from 866 till 1600 (max of my RAM)

I have no onboard GPU so I cannot check if the GPU is the problem. But the GPU worked before I changed cases. Because I tried to OC I have the feeling that its related to CPU or Motherboard. In the 4h period in which my system was running, I used Prime95 to check if my CPU has an issue but did work fine for 30min.

Please HELP!! My only idea at this point is buy a new CPU/MoBo/RAM combo.

I've had a number of problems with games freezing after installing the Creator's Update for Windows 10.  I haven't had anything at the system level yet, but a few games have become unplayable.  Researching that, I've seen others complain about system level freezes, all starting when they installed the CU.  I rolled back that update, and all of my problems went away.

I don't know how long I can hold off on CU.  I'm set to "Defer Feature Updates" now, but I know that doesn't last forever.  Before buying a new rig, I'd say at least try rolling back your OS to something prior to Win 10 CU to see if that does any good.  I might roll back down to Win 8 if I can't prevent the Creator's Update.

@Firethorne Thanks for the tip. That is a very good point. I have no idea when the CU was installed before so maybe that is the issue.

But as write this my PC does work again. I changed the PSU to my old one which was in the old case. So far the system is running Prime95, Firefox and GForce Expierience at the same time with no freezing.

Could the PSU be the issue?? It is a brand new one but maybe I was unluck? I will further test the system to see if it is realy fine or is just having a good day.
