I am currently trying to edit a fairly short (5-6min) video on the ryzen rig in my signature. However there is severe timeline and playback stutter. I'm using shotcut to edit 4k h.264 mp4 files shot on my oneplus 3. I have the video files on the intel 520 series SSD (not the phone).

I understand that 4k files will not be helping matters, but is there any way to improve timeline performance? None of the hardware is being fully utilized. Less than 50% CPU and under 10% GPU load, with 8GB of RAM free. I have tried switching to openGL and enabling GPU acceleration.

I'm  thinking about re-encoding the files to a lower resolution, and a different codec. What would you recommend?

I understand shotcut is not the best software out there for video editing, but since I only edit videos at max 4 times a year, I do not wish to spend money on sorting this out, although I am willing to switch from shotcut if there is a compelling option for a reasonable price given how much use I will get from it.

How bad is the stuttering, You can always encode the files into a lower resolution and codec, and then using that file to edit and then encode it back to 4k, I know it's a longer solution but sometimes the long way is the better way

Im mostly on discord now and you can find me on my profile

Really really bad. Just about unworkable.

Yeah I understand I can edit at 1080p, I was hoping for some recommendations for intermediate codecs that require less decoding than h.264.

I don't know many codecs I just choose one that fits within the YouTube thing and that's really odd why it's not being normal

Okay, thanks. Might just be shotcut idiosyncrasies.
