Do I need more cpu or more gpu power to get 1440p 144fps?

I just upgraded from 1080p 60hz and I'm having trouble making the most of my new monitor.

 

I have: intel core i5 4690k and nvidida gtx 1070

well that depends what games you want to play and what settings to be honest but probably a 1080ti and I would look at upgrading the CPU if you are going to take that route

Most likely gpu. Check CPU and gpu usage while gaming.

Depends on the Game. I have 1440p 144hz (Gsync) too and there are only 2 noticable steps. 75Hz and 100Hz. Above 100Hz there is no real difference in my Eyes.

The 1070 is most likely the "culprit".

I'm running a 1080 with an i7-6700 and usually don't hit 144fps on highest settings in games like overwatch.

1440p is twice the power-rquirement of 1080 and 144fps is quite demanding as well. 

But

GPU most likely, then CPU but like always it depends on the game you play and the settings you use ingame
