The CPU and motherboard are now the only remaining parts of my machine that are from the prebuilt I was bought as a gift and its time I look at parting them out.

Now that being said I am not totally inept with building my own PC's etc etc, BUT still VERY confused with the current state of CPU's, for example Skylake more expensive than Kabylake in some stores here in the UK, and found very mixed info on whether Kabylike is worth upgrading too from Skylake, as well as very mixed info on Ryzen.

When I first started researching into a new CPU I thought my choice if a Skylake based I5-6600k would be the best fit, HOWEVER as mentioned previously I saw the Kabylake version of that chip (I5-7600k?) for less money, so it made me wonder what on earth is going on, same story when I looked into I7's.... So i started looking at Ryzen specs and information, and well, if anything the confusion is worse so I thought I would ask here for peoples experiences on both teams.

Current Setup

I5-6400

Acer preditor g3-710 factory fitted mobo

16GB Corsair Vengeance 2400mhz DDR4

Gigabyte Windforce GTX 1070

Corsair CX750M

Corsair H80i GT

Primarily a gaming machine but I occasionally make videos for YouTube and/or live stream.

Looking too not spend the earth but also not wasting my money by spending too little if you catch my drift, or just buying something that's a waste of time and money altogether. But I would be buying new not used, especially if going for an overclock able chip (highly likely :) )

So the jump from Skylake to kabylake was 6-7% which is why most feel its not worth it. Skylake X is a reskin of the same CPU basically with higher out of the box clocks and new chipset, so again not worth it. Intel has a habit of making things confusing. I would either hold on to what you have, and then upgrade in a few months if coffee lake is worth it, or just keep your setup for a bit because there isn't a compelling reason to upgrade, unless again Coffee lake is really good.

But you dont know if 7700 will work because it is proprietary/OEM mobo

Don't buy Apple M1 computers with 8GB of RAM

Sure and you would need to double check to make sure your motherboard got the BIOS upgrade to support kabylake, or you can download it online if not. It would be a viable upgrade from a i5 6400, but it might be worth it to wait for a month or two to see what coffee lake offers.

BUT can i get better going with Ryzen?

IF you are going to replace the mobo no matter what, I actually made the upgrade from an i5 6400-t to a ryzen 1600 for about $325 and it was a great switch.  I recommend switching there

🙂

My current choice is a I5-7600k and a Asrock Z270 gaming K6 mobo

Buying any i5 in 2017 is a terrible investment, full stop.  I recomended a 7700(k) + whatever mobo you like, get a z series if you want to get a k i7.

Want to custom loop?  Ask me more if you are curious

an i7k will be knocking on the door of £450 GBP by the time I get a board I like and that's just not on the cards sadly.

however for £256 GBP I can go too a Ryzen 5 1500X and get a board I like/has 2 PCIe 3.0 slots for that and that should piss all over the I5-6400 with a minor o/c no?

Also with that being AM4 future CPU choice is better than 1151 imo

Right I will be going with a Ryzen 5 1600x and a Gigabyte GA-AB350M-GAMING-3 AM4 B350 Chipset M-ATX Motherboard which including next day delivery comes in at £300 and change, the cost of an I7, let alone the cost of a motherboard for the I7 that will def wok ontop is just not feesable.
