I'm completely new and venturing into both videography(youtube) and photography.

Basically, I'm selling some drum stuff for 250 SGD and there's this guy selling a Nikon d5100 for 350 SGD and his completely ok to trade it with me 1-1 with 18-55mm lens

Here's the description:

The DSLR comes with original accessories (Original Box, Charger, Manual, CD, Strap, EN-EL14 Battery) The Camera is in very good condition as it is very well taken care of, kept in electronic dry cabinet when not in use.

I'm into making videos quite a bit.. Just find joy in making stupid skits and also I'm quite enthusiastic about photography as a whole so..

Is this a good DSLR for complete newbs like me?

We are far too easily pleased.”

That seems reasonable. That camera in good shape is going for around $300 used with the 18-55 kit lens. The only thing to be aware of, is that camera is only capable of 1080p at 30fps or 24fps. So if you are after that buttery smooth 60fps, there are much better options out there. What this would afford you, is a near limitless option of lenses and accessories on the third party market. In the end, you could probably find a better option new, and cheaper for recording 1080p at 60fps, with other trade offs.

I personally have this camera actually, and it's a splendid entry level DSLR.

You can do AF in live view mode (provided you're using an AF-S lens of course), and thus in video recording, but it's hideously slow and hunts nearly every time. If you're recording a video that's, say an interview where your subject won't be moving much, you can get around this because once you lock focus, you're good. But for action sports, you're screwed. There's no way the camera will be able to keep up, unless you're filming cricket or something.

The AF motor also has this disgusting sound while it's focusing in live view, and if you're using the camera's built-in microphone, that sound will appear on your audio.

You can't really do the typical run-and-gun videoing that you can do with a camcorder. Like I mentioned above, AF is slow and, in my experience, video is better suited to a situation where you can take the time to set focus before you begin recording, rather than expecting the camera to keep up with a subject constantly moving around your frame.

What I've found the d5100 is great for is recording yourself. The variable angle LCD screen lets you turn it on yourself easily.

In my experience this is the story of every DSLR, if you want to focus on videography that's probably not the best.

However if you're into photography it's a good budget option, getting everything as if it were new sounds great also.

You might want to look into the newer version of the 5x00-series though, the 5100 is at 12MP while the newer big brothers of it has 24MP, twice as much basically. The 18-55mm lens is great for all round usage.

When you get into photography and want to make the picure yours I suggest trying to learn how to use Manual mode on your DSLR (M), this way you can make focus depth, shutter speed and aperture yours.

So if i stick to stock lens it'll be an ok deal?

I peronally want to make videos like H3H3 style, because I love making fun of stupid funny stuff :P

B-rolls are pretty cool. Heck we're in Linustechtips so I'll definitely do some random reviews of cool stuff..

So I guess it fits the bill? :)
I'll try to get a 1 for 1 deal without top ups since the guy is desperately selling and upgrading drum stuff and mine is on hard discount anyways

It's a slippery slope. You'll never be happy with one lens, let alone a kit lens.

Probably.. But I'll try to control >w<

Again, keep in mind that full time auto focus is pretty "meh".

But if you think it fits it fits :)
