Massive FPS drops. GPU dying?

You have 3.5GB of VRAM, games at 1080P take 3G mostly, so 1440p will take more naturally. Install MSI afterburner and you'll see how much you use and I guarantee that you will be maxed out when playing PUBG or Siege. I had 780 TI in SLI and I was playing at 4K and everything seemed fine but it was 2 years ago. I had RAM usage of 16-20GB in Shadow of Mordor when playing at 4K with my 780 TI SLI (all background tasks closed, it was just the game). 

 

The reason why others don't have an issue is because they either don't play at 1440p or they have GPUs with at least 6GB of VRAM. Like the new 1060 or 980 TI.

 

Steam survey shows that like 90% of people play at 1080P still, and average card is is 970.

 

(I play The Division right now at 1440p and I'm using 5GB of VRAM), and it's a game from 2015.

 

Check VRAM usage using MSI Afterburner and reinstall drivers. Also, lower the resolution to 1080p and check if you have the issue still. It's an easy check and it doesn't hurt to see if this causes the problem.

I currently have a dual SLI 970 setup and recently I have been having an issue that is extremely annoying. When I am playing a game everything will be fine, stable fps, no stuttering, then all of a sudden I drop to 10 frames for about 15-20 seconds and then everything is fine again. This happens about once every 30-45 minutes. 

My temps seemed to be fine on the gpu(80). CPU temps are fine. Drivers are up too date. I'm not sure what it could be so any suggestions would be great. 

 

I do not have access to my PC until Friday night so I will not be able to test anything as of right now. 

All of my specs in my signature are up too date.

Is anything using the CPU during those spikes? I don't think the GPUs are dying.

Nothing. I can have just the game open and it still does it. I always do a clean install of my gpu drivers as well so it wouldn't be the drivers. I have also re-installed them to test this. It's on any game, even a game like Minecraft. It's becoming a real annoying problem.

1. You're running out of VRAM at 1440p easily when playing stuff like Siege, PUBG so if it happens in those games this could be the reason. When you run out of VRAM, and your system doesn't stop it's because your system borrows from your real ram which is 3x slower.

CS GO and Minecraft are light games.

 

If you have games on HDD, it can cause long loading times and sometimes stuttering if hard drives are going bad.

 

I suggest to remove drivers COMPLETELY using a tool, (DDU), reinstall and see what happens. Simply reinstalling won't help you. You have to uninstall them completely using DDU and install again.

 

My 1080 TI had stuttering issue and when I reinstalled drivers, issue stopped.

Yes pubg eats up a lot of vram. My vram usage when playing pubg at 1080p is 5.5gb

Yea, the game isn't optimised as beautifully as e.g. MGS Phantom Pain etc.

Right now I put this as the solved answer. I'll try it when I get home. I'll keep you updated on if that's the issue.
