Unless I've missed some news somewhere along the line, SATA development is limited by the way it interacts with the CPU. USB has overtaken it for raw speed, so why are we still using SATA as our main drive interface for large numbers of drives? Scenarios exist where we need more speed than SATA in numerous SSD's in the same system. While NVME / PCI-E interfaces fill the gap for small numbers of very high speed drives it seems like a stop-gap while we wait for something better than SATA for traditional drive mounting. SAS can go faster but neither are specifically designed to leverage the design of solid state storage...

 

Cabled NVME where massive PCI-E bandwidth is available?

 

Imagine a connector where Linus can actually leverage the full performance of an array of high capacity SSD drives for a new high speed server project!!

My guess is that U.2 will come back and possibly be used. This was all the rage before NVME M.2 SSDs but has gone quiet in recent times.

I think we need to see mechanical HDDs increase their bandwidth usage before anyone really cares, I'm pretty sure they don't use the full bandwidth available even at sata2.
